Tie knots all the time! Having a length of line around to just get the feel of tying knots while you're only half thinking about it is great. Same deal with all the jargon too - what helped me most was just trying to use it as much as possible

Heading to the sail loft tomorrow, we're gonna start rigging up the ship - main task is reinstalling a top mast (i.e. I will most likely be heaving around the capstan most of the day)

Fun thing to think about very briefly: who currently has better lawyers, the United States or Nintendo

well not really sir. you see we're mainly stealing money. Also that is, uh, going to a Qatari bank account

Incredibly angry about this every day.

The people who pick on trans kids are not only disgusting freaks who want to inspect children's genitals, they're also miserable bullies who break the rules of decency laid down by every measurement of morality.

A fun thing to think about right now is "Who has better lawyers, the US or Nintendo"

Juvenile king penguin, covered in dense brown fuzz

Juvenile king penguin, covered in dense brown fuzz

It was fuzzy brown stuff, mostly natural fibers, you can imagine what it looks like. So when ships first began making the trip around Patagonia, the sailors began seeing juvenile penguins, probably King penguins. They called them the "oakum boys"

Probably my favorite sailor lore that I've learned since joining a crew is this: On wooden ships, sailors used the frayed fibers from lines mixed with tar or oil to make a sealing material called oakum, which could be used to caulk up gaps in the hull or seal pipe joints.
