This is almost certainly a garter snake. The bright yellow dorsal stripe on a dark body is a classic field mark.

Garter snakes eat:
slugs, snails, grasshoppers, beetles, small rodents, small invasive frogs

They reduce the pests that chew leaves, destroy seedlings, or raid stored food.

Tree at the center of the picture to the top. The tree continues to grow but hollows out from the inside, so there is a hollow there, trees and branches to the left and right
