Protecting access to places of worship, schools Government plans measures to make schools safer, introduce similar protections for places of worship

Every community deserves to feel safe in the places that matter most to them.

This legislation builds on actions we have taken to protect vulnerable communities: expanding the BC Hate Crimes Unit, funding security upgrades at at-risk community spaces, and investing in antisemitism training for law enforcement across the province.

These laws do not prohibit peaceful protest. They protect people's ability to learn and pray in peace.

Bill 12 extends safe access zones around B.C.'s K-12 schools. Bill 13 creates new protected zones around places of worship — synagogues, mosques, gurdwaras, temples, churches, and more — shielding communities from intimidation, obstruction, and disruption.

Spaces where communities come together should always be safe. Today, our government introduced two pieces of legislation to protect that safety — for students and teachers at school, and for everyone who gathers to worship.

2/3 My Ministry has been in touch with police leadership across the province. Out of an abundance of caution, B.C. police are increasing patrols near synagogues and places of worship.

1/3 This weekend’s shooting attacks on synagogues in Toronto are deeply disturbing. A threat to one community is a threat and concern to us all, and as Canadians we must stand together against anti-Jewish hate.

Training sites approved to increase police recruits in B.C. Police training locations in Vancouver, Victoria will be satellites of the justice institute

Combined these measures will help meet the evolving recruitment needs of municipal police forces across the province.

Starting in May 2026, the JIBC will increase each of its three police training cohorts per year, from 96 seats to 144 seats enabling the Academy to graduate up to 432 trained police recruits per year.

In addition to the approval of these two new satellite campuses, the JIBC Police Academy is further expanding training capacity to strengthen policing capacity across the province.

B.C. has approved two new satellite JIBC campuses — one in Vancouver, one in Victoria — to help municipal police departments train more recruits faster.

These sites will operate under @JIBC Police Academy oversight, with the same curriculum and standards British Columbians expect.

This coverage extends to career, volunteer, wildfire, and First Nations firefighters across the province.

When firefighters run toward danger to protect others, we have a duty to ensure they and their families are cared for.

That's why I'm proud our government is expanding presumptive cancer coverage for B.C. firefighters. Eight additional cancers will now be recognized as work-related, bringing the total to 26 — making B.C. the most comprehensive province in Canada for firefighter cancer coverage.

This week, I had the honour of meeting with firefighters from my community and across B.C. during BCPFFA day at the legislature. The courage and dedication they bring to protecting our communities is extraordinary — and it was a privilege to hear from them directly.

The BC Provincial Extortion Task Force has secured charges against three men — Avtar Singh, Sandeep Singh, and Jagdeep Singh — in connection with shootings at a Surrey home.

This case crossed provincial borders with @BCRCMP, @SurreyPS, @CFSEUBC, @CanBorderPAC, @CalgaryPolice, @RCMPAlberta engaged.
