Vintage necchi BU sewing machine on a table sitting in a sheet of aluminum foil with dirty cotton balls, cups and other cleaning tools scattered around it. The paint work is black and dirty while all the chrome parts gleam brightly
I need to do a very thorough cleaning of the black painted parts but after a deep cleaning of all the silver parts.. it's so shiny ๐

also, yay the replacement foot pedal came in for the sewing machine today, and double yay, the motor (a replacement one from taiwan added probably decades ago?) works! so once I get everything cleaned up I can probably USE the machine for something

I'd wager that at least in part it's an in-group/out-group signaling thing where "hey I know the WORD for this thing so I'm in the special in-group"

I'm having a surprising amount of fun cleaning up this sewing machine... and even more funny is I don't have the first clue on how to use one! mom had an 80s era sewing machine at some point that I saw her use as a kid but never understood. so gotta hit youtube later =x

ok just a few more parts to clean on the sewing machine. Then the touchup paint arrives sunday. so plenty of time to scrub off flaking paint chips... and time to stop by home depot to buy some wood to make a simple base. And I can finally use the pocket hole jig I got last year!

ok those are gorgeous and I certainly don't have the guts to strip the whole thing down to the point where I can do a full prime and paint. I'll probably chip off all the flaking paint, sand smooth and retouch all the bare spots in black.
But i'm gonna make all the silvery bits shinyyyyyyy

lol oops, I had been using red plastic cups to hold onto the mineral spirits while I dip into it w/ cotton swabs to work and it was more or less fine. but then when I used it in the ultrasonic I learned that the spirits was.. EATING THROUGH THE PLASTIC ahaha. oh well. it'll clean out

Rediscovering joy in silly computer stuff
I sometimes lose track of whether I have written a Thursday post two weeks ago or not... But I do write them! Like this one!
I have a pretty clear memory of one of the silliest programs I've written ...
A thursday subscriber post on Counting Stuff, which is a bit of an essay, I suppose?, about rediscovering that it can be really fun to make computers do silly things now that the hyper complex tech stacks needed to "make stuff work" has been simplified w/ aids www.counting-stuff.com/rediscoverin...

also the left radical for the cat is the one that's used for animals, and one for draw is 'hand' which sorta helps explain what's going on

Question is how long before I eventual fail at talking myself out of getting a mini desktop milling machine... I technically want one to flatten my 6" gem laps but is it worth like 3k to do that.......

Sorta kinda! I'm not likely to do a lot of sewing but occasionally I need something that I can't do easily by hand. And restoring an old machine is lots of fun

Another hour of cleaning before heading to work, now cleaning the brightwork. Lots of mineral spirits. Cotton swabs, an ultrasonic cleaner, and occasionally car body polish

as an example I have this thing, the code is on my mounted NAS drive... the build tooling completely shits the bed figuring because the naming/pathing conventions for network drives is weird. I would've just given up debugging that shit after a few hours

ok, so one reason I don't write a lot of code outside of work is because I have a windows desktop and it's an annoyance to spin up a linux machine (prior to WSL2) and the dev/compile process is a utter shitshow... luckily llm agents are pretty good at un-fucking up my dev env to get a complie

I host static websites straight off google cloud storage with a cloudflare redirecting thing to handle SSL to a domain, can do something similar w/ S3, once its set up, it's as easy as uploading files

OK, a bit of morning work, got the bobbin winder attachment cleaned up, also gave the big bushing that links the balance wheel assembly a polish. it was all yellow when I started but later I found out it's got a steel piece along with the brass

Ok, I think I've cleaned the internals of the machine as good as I'm gonna get it, so re-oiled and everything moves quite smoothly. Now to clean lots of exterior parts and the balance wheel
