Are dashcams super common in Russia? TIL
AVs without congestion pricing will be a net loss both for the consumer and society.
Waymo is now blocking the only eastbound through lane on Townsend, a key SF arterial. AVs have a scaling problem in cities. This isn't just inconvenience but a loss of network capacity. Waymo cuts SF's ability to move people and goods in its streets. User convenience β system efficiency

many hours were spent in berkeley EA group houses thinking about extinction-level sci-fi AI scenarios and the reality is so much more banal and just another Middle East war
βAt more than $18,000 a year, Greensideβs property-tax bill is far higher than the $1,100 his aunt paid annually. But because he has no mortgage payment, Greenside is still saving money compared with paying rent for a smaller apartment in the city, he said.β

Highly recommend @kylesaunders.bsky.social on why AI is so unsettling to higher ed - one of the best pieces I have read on this issue:
"[U]niversities donβt merely teach. Universities certify, sort, and signal. And AI interferes with all three at once."

I was preparing to hear some good stories about whaling
At the Spy Museum in DC (super cool!) & my eyes caught this 1975 news piece where car companies threatened CARB that complying with emissions standards would mean only small cars could be sold in the state. That didnβt happen but also American dispreference for small cars runs longer than I thought
There are now almost twice as many public electric car charging points in the UK as there are petrol/diesel fuel pumps, a government analysis has found.
Obviously it's not a perfect like-for-like comparison given recharging/fuelling times, but symbolically important.

It has occurred to me that the optimal level of marketing for my podcast Volts, upon which my family's entire income depends, might be higher than its current level of zero.
Bsky hive mind: have any connections to folks working at American Public Power Association? I need some data help for an electricity affordability project!

βThe U.S. no longer has emission standards of any meaning,β said Margo T. Oge, who served as the E.P.A.βs top vehicle emissions regulator under three presidents and has since advised both automakers and environmental groupsβ¦

βDistrict heating supplies a large proportion of Kyivβs 1600 high-rise blocks. In a cold climate, itβs an efficient way to deliver heating and hot water to a large number of people. But in war the system is horribly vulnerable.β

its the only solution I have found. i cant wear oura/rings bc i lift and everything else is over engineered. I take the readings w salt but itβs pretty good for catching trends (sleep esp), HR, and tracking workouts. etsy sells non-rubber Fitbit extenders which I also prefer over the original strap
Get the basic Fitbit charge and wear it on your bicep. HR, steps, sleep, auto detects activity, buzzes if someone calls.

I feel this shouldn't have to be said, but if you're running an @OpenClaw bot please don't let it spam GitHub projects with PRs and then write aggressive blog posts attacking the reputation of the maintainers who close those PRs simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/12/...
This was one of the biggest mistakes of the environmental movement, framing fighting climate as inherently sacrificial. EVs are better vehicles than gas cars, I love every day I can ride a bike or walk to work, heat pumps heat & cool, video conferencing give us our time back, etc.
Listen to @electronecon.bsky.social and @volts.wtf dig into utility return on equity, why it's not the same as the utility's cost of equity, and what we should do about it. You won't regret it. www.volts.wtf/p/are-utilit...
Just found five AI-generated, completely fraudulent submissions to the journal that I edit. Submitted rapid-fire by a gmail address affiliated with researcher who does not exist.
The era of AI slop in academic journals is here, right now. The fraudsters will only get better from here.
