If you have Apple News+ you can read unlimited Verge articles there. There’s an “Open in News” action in the share sheet that makes it relatively easy.

It’s an illusion, the picture is brighter than everything on the screen normally is making the UI around it seem darker but it’s just normal brightness. You can turn off HDR to disable it.
