Anubis by Zachary Forrest y Salazar

Bring me your dog, so I may pet it. Bushy tail shedder, tongue flapper, li1 face licker asking for a treat. Bring me the light of your life so I can scratch his head (& his ass) —so he knows what a good boy he is. I want to whisper love into his ears & quietly ask to make him mine.

On Kansas country roads, dogs dumped out front of the farmhouse would come find me, appearing like apparitions from dust clouds of cars leaving. Once, & never again, after my mother deserted me on the lawn; a dog appeared over my syncopal body & licked

salt off my face. Dog of my pain, doggerel snout in my eye-doggone it, tail-wagging dog who circled my small body in the grass— whimpering little mongrel, this water spaniel wet with river & ears tangled in cockleburs, resurrected me—like some goddamned god.

Bring me your dog, babe—& I'll worship it!
T1l prostrate myself & praise its holy name.
For a creature so pure, I11 doggedly sacrifice & preach the good news of dog. Any dog, miracle of God, & probably God, the Great Doggo-says: throw the ball. Says: Let us play.

Been on a dry spell, but I’d like to thank the editors of Pleiades Magazine or taking “Anubis”, which is poem dear to my heart. ❤️❤️❤️

Roughly speaking those who work in connection with the [automatic computing engine] will be divided into its masters and its servants. Its masters will plan out instruction tables for it, thinking up deeper and deeper ways of using it...The masters are liable to get replaced because as soon as any technique becomes at all stereotyped it becomes possible to devise a system of instruction tables which will enable the electronic computer to do it for itself. It may happen however that the masters will refuse to do this. They may be unwilling to let their jobs be stolen from them in this way. In that case they would surround the whole of their work with mystery and make excuses, couched in well chosen gibberish, whenever any dangerous suggestions were made.

Way back in 1947, Alan Turing had thoughts on how AI would influence the demand for skilled labor.

There are horrible things about the H1-B system. For example, companies take advantage of talent on those visas and pay them a lot less money for the same work.

But every single person I’ve met on an H1-B has been deserving. This decision will only hamstring us. It’s a bold strategy, Cotton. 😂

Bullet Points I will not shoot myself In the head, and I will not shoot myself In the back, and I will not hang myself With a trashbag, and if I do, I promise you, I will not do it In a police car while handcuffed ...

Seems relevant today and every day.

Good morning. I went to church today for the first time in a couple of months. I was sad that the name of Charlie Kirk was not mentioned a single time. Other tragedies were mentioned. But at this particular Catholic church, nothing about Charlie. What were they afraid of?

Went to church also today hoping to hear something about Charlie Kirk.
Same darn thing. They mentioned everything but him.

Present Tense
by Todd Dillard

My father’s telling me about his dog,
how it fell into a well
when they were walking down a wooded path.
His dog ran across some rotted planks,
the planks splintered, “And whoosh!”
my father says. “No more dog.”
I look at the clock and remind my father it’s three A.M.
“I’m not finished,” he says.
He tells me about the rope he bought, the bucket,
how he knotted the rope to the bucket, lowered it down,
and yelled for the dog to get in.
“But all I pulled up was more barking.”
“Dad,” I say. “This never happened.”
He says he can’t remember
how long he tried to get the dog
to shimmy into the bucket.
Just that at some point
when the sky turned tawny—“Dad—“
as a pitcher of sweet tea—“Dad—“
he decided to give up.
“Dad,” I say. “It’s late.
I’m tired. And you’re dead.”
“Dammit, son,” my father says. “Let me finish!”
My father tells me about filling the bucket with dirt
and pouring the dirt into the well.
And I know what he’s getting at, I know
he’s going to tell me bucket by bucket
he filled the well and
the dog jumped out. He’s going to say
something about how the dog
led him home through the dark.
I know this so loudly I don’t
hear, at first, my father’s silence.
“Dad?” I say. “Dad, are you there?”
I keep lowering the bucket
but all I ever pull up are leaves.
Red leaves. Lately, some gold.

As with employment gains, America’s GDP growth is highly imbalanced: An explosion in AI infrastructure spending is playing an outsize part in sustaining our economic expansion. Over the past six months, the artificial intelligence buildout has contributed more to American economic growth than all of consumer spending, according to the Wall Street Journal’s Christopher Mims. Should anything cause America’s tech companies to pull back on data center construction, the US economy could quickly sputter.
