Protests against Citizens Bank for ICE detention facility financing planned in Connecticut Saturday
The protest arises around the bank's financing of CoreCivic and The GEO Group, which run ICE detention facilities.
"Customers of Citizens Bank may not know that when they deposit money into their accounts, they are indirectly supporting ICE and its abusive behavior," Laura Cassenti of MA/CT Stop Avelo said. "Citizens Bank is profiting from abuse. No company should profit from pain."

Iranian national Pejman Karshenas Najafabadi, 59, died in ICE custody earlier this week. His was the 11th in-custody death that we know of in 2026.
That amounts to an average of one detained death approximately every six days, writes Austin Kocher: austinkocher.substack.com/p/third-ice-...

There are a few dozen Indivisible groups and several others working on a pressure campaign around this on the East Coast (where Citizens has a huge regional presence), but I know engagement varies a lot. Figuring out the landscape from afar is tough, so I appreciate the insight.

Kristi Noemβs firing is long overdue. She oversaw vile crimes against humanity and weβll never forget it.
But until ICE is abolished and expelled from our communities, we keep fighting.
Lawless federal agents kidnapping and killing people on our streets can never be normalized.

Headline from ABC 10 News San Diego: "San Diego County supervisors prepare lawsuit over blocked Otay Mesa detention center inspection"
"What are they hiding? Is it the lack of clean drinking water that we've heard about in letters from detainees, is it the medical neglect that has led to preventable emergencies, or is it the fact that a private for-profit corporation is running a facility that can't pass a basic health inspection?"

Homeland Security Department is stonewalling watchdog investigations, GOP senator alleges
Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., said that he would procedurally obstruct the legislative process until officials respond to his questions about department oversight.
The Department of Homeland Security, which houses ICE, has been stonewalling the agency's federal watchdog in its attempts to conduct oversight.
This is yet another reason DHS Secretary Kristi Noem must go. #ImpeachNoem https://bit.ly/4b68YFA

In October 2018, ICE issued a penalty against
CoreCivic for the deaths of Efrain de la Rosa
and Jean Jimenez, both of whom died at the
Stewart Detention Center in 2017 and 2018
respectively.133 These financial penalties totaled
40% of CoreCivicβs monthly βBed day detentionβ
invoice for May 2017, or an estimated total of
approximately $1.4 million, and a 20% deduction
of the same for July 2017, or approximately
$700,000. 134 In comparison, ICE paid CoreCivic
$441 million for detention contracts in 2017.135
One month after issuing this penalty, ICE
awarded CoreCivic a new contract to provide medical care
to detainees at Stewart. Between
2017 and May 2024, ten people detained at
Stewart died in ICE custody, the highest number
of detention deaths in the entire nation. Despite
that record, Stewart remains fully operational as
an ICE detention facility.
And integral to their business model.
Four of the five deadliest ICE facilities are run by CoreCivic, and the worst they've seen is a slap on the wrist.

ICE Deaths in Custody | UCLA Law Behind Bars Data Project
The UCLA Law Behind Bars Data Project works to increase transparency and accountability in the US carceral system by compiling and researching data on deaths in custody.
It's from a new dashboard that looks at deaths in ICE custody all the way back to 2003.
It distinguishes between publicly & privately run facilities, but not between operators, so I should note that my observation is based on who is *currently* operating the facilities.
