Countries that take a stable, planned approach to cancer services see improvements over time, in survival, equity and patient experience.
With cancer incidence rising and pressure on the NHS increasing, Wales cannot afford short-term thinking.
Long-term strategies deliver better outcomes.
Our new briefing sets out the case for a long-term, national approach to cancer planning.
It draws on conversations with clinicians, planners, third sector organisations and people with lived experience, alongside international evidence.
The message is consistent:
Right now, Wales is relying on short-term plans and initiatives to drive improvement in cancer services.
Those approaches haven’t delivered the scale or consistency of change patients need.
Cancer services require sustained, strategic planning — not stop-start reform.
Today we’re in Llandudno at Venue Cymru for the Welsh Conservatives Conference.
The Wales Cancer Alliance is using this conference season to press one clear message:
Wales needs a long-term cancer strategy. 🧵

✍️Today (23 01 26), the Senedd’s Health and Social Care Committee published its anticipated follow-up report into the implementation of the ‘Unheard’ recommendations.
“Currently, prehabilitation services are not routinely available to everyone who could benefit and it is time to ensure that effort is made to reduce the variation in access.”
@lowrigriffiths.bsky.social Chair, Wales Cancer Alliance
Prehabilitation is now in all National Optimal Pathways. Yet significant inequities persist in access, referral and uptake across NHS Wales.

Together, we can create a better future for cancer care in Wales. 💙
#WalesCancerAlliance
Behind every statistic are people facing cancer. 💙
The next Welsh Government has a chance to fix the foundations and create cancer services that are timely, compassionate, and world-class.
We stand ready to work together to make it happen. 🌼

5. 📊 Without good data, we can’t improve care.
We’re calling for robust, routine cancer data — on waiting times, experiences, outcomes, and inequalities — to drive real improvement across Wales. 📈
#WalesCancerAlliance
Patients and the third sector are too often brought in late to decisions.
We believe patient voices and third sector expertise must be at the heart of designing cancer services from the very start. 🤝
#WalesCancerAlliance
Cancer care is complex. From workforce shortages to rising diagnoses, leadership matters.
👥 We’re calling for strong, consistent leadership with clear accountability for cancer services in Wales — so progress is driven, not delayed.
#WalesCancerAlliance
❌ Wales is the only UK nation without a dedicated cancer strategy.
✅ We need a new, long-term cancer strategy that covers prevention, early diagnosis, treatment, living beyond cancer, and end of life.
🗺️ Patients deserve a roadmap for better outcomes, not patchwork plans.
