No amount of wonderful experiences in the future can undo the awful things I've been through and will go through. It's not a summable matter. Harm isn't something you can undo. I would rather a life with no suffering but no joy than one with much of both.

I've been through a lot of awful stuff in life, and I'm very afraid of the fact that the future almost guaranteeably involves more suffering and harm. It's hard to look forward to anything when you're always afraid of new wounds that will never heal, be they physical or emotional.
