I guess it really depends on what your design demands. In this case, 8-direction movement is common and expected for PC. Any more precision would have to be solved by something more analog. Mouse movement vectors perhaps. Or 2nd mouse input?
Just a thought, could you simulate diagonal input with WASD by input buffering with some built-in nearly imperceptible delay, allowing WA, WD, AS, SD to work like a fighting game combo buffer but just move diagonal (normalized of course!)
