A comprehensive overview of Apache DataFusion: what it is (and what it's not), its extensibility, performance and vast ecosystem.
Truly interesting also are the very diverse contributors. This is likely because it started as @andygrove.io side project and grew from the start under the ASF umbrella.

Compared to 2024, the number of foreign visitors to the U.S. in 2025 has declined by more than 6.8 m (-9.4%). The overwhelming majority of this decline is due to a substantial drop in Canadian visitors (-5.6 million, -27.5%). The economic effects are nontrivial, esp. on the hospitality sector.

Vice headline reads: "Zara, Nike, and Abercrombieโs Indian Factories Werenโt Fully Paying Workers" The story was reporting on something put out by the Workers Rights Consortium.
Story at Mind The Gap reads: CASE STUDY: Zara fights sanctions for forced labour in Brazilian supply chain Spanish fast fashion giant Zara, an Inditex brand, has been found to source clothes from Brazilian workshops with modern slavery conditions but fought against sanctions in court โ showing how corporations seek to avoid liability by hiding behind complex supply chains.
Disappointed to learn Bad Bunny wore Zara, effectively promoting the brand to millions. Although Zara has made admirable strides to address labor conditions, fast fashion can never be ethical because it depends on rapid production and cheap prices, which results in worker exploitation.

On this week's Oxide and Friends, @booch.com joined @bcantrill.bsky.social and me to talk about the past, present, and future of software engineering. From hand-made computers and the software crisis of the late '60s to LLMs (of course) we covered a lot... with--as always--many dated references!

The Omiwatari freezing of Lake Suwa, described in this article from last month, has not occurred this season. The chief priest of the local shrine confirmed it today. That makes it eight consecutive seasons, which is the longest break in 512 years. japannews.yomiuri.co.jp/society/gene...

Ms. Omar, visibly shaken after the assault, insisted to her staff and security that she would continue. She asked for a napkin and told them: "Just give me 10 minutes. I beg you. Please don't let them have the show." Ms. Omar then turned the crowd. "Here's the reality that people like this ugly man don't understand," she said. "We are Minnesota strong, and we will stay resilient in the face of whatever they might throw at us." Someone in the crowd later thanked Ms. Omar for staying and continuing after the assault, which had shaken not only her but the entire room. "I learned at a young age you don't give in to threats," Ms. Omar said.

Respectfully, no. I think it's perfectly okay to be ashamed of past behavior even if at the time it was acceptable, or at least tolerated. Also, bluntly, there has never been a time in my life where the "r"-word was not used as a slur, even when it was legitimately used clinically.

stop using AI to do your research. it hallucinates too often. if you want an answer to something, post something arrogant on the appropriate subreddit. something like: "this item performs 10% better than everything else. only idiots deny this." this will bait nerds into doing your research for you.

Currently reading The Dream Hotel by Laila Lalami. A woman is detained indefinitely because the surveillance algorithm predicts future crimes. Itโs excellent so far and way too real at the current moment.
Alex Jeffrey Pretti was an ICU nurse at a VA hospital. His life, through his profession, was dedicated to serving his community and our country.
As so many have now seen on video, his final act before he was killed by federal agents was doing everything in his power to protect his community.
