This week, we discuss a PC repair battle, a revealing comment from an FBI official, and a dangerous narrative.
This shows the sort of data that Proton Mail, which prides itself both on end-to-end encryption and that it's only governed by Swiss privacy law, can provide to third parties. In this case, the FBI. @evystadium.bsky.social has more.

SCOOP: Proton Mail provided Swiss authorities with payment data that the FBI then used to determine who was allegedly behind an anonymous account affiliated with the Stop Cop City movement in Atlanta, according to a court record reviewed by 404 Media.

Edward Shone, head of communications for Proton AG, told 404 Media in an email: “We want to first clarify that Proton did not provide any information to the FBI, the information was obtained from the Swiss justice department via MLAT." Functionally, though, the material was provided to the FBI.
The records provide insight into the sort of data that Proton Mail, which prides itself both on its end-to-end encryption and that it is only governed by Swiss privacy law, can and does provide to third parties. In this case, the Proton Mail account was affiliated with the Defend the Atlanta Forest.

New from 404 Media: Proton Mail, the privacy-focused email service, gave authorities data that let the FBI unmask an anonymous 'Stop Cop City' protester. It was payment data linked to the anonymous email account. From that, FBI ID'd them, then tracked their movements www.404media.co/proton-mail-...
UPDATE: Another $5.6 million from ICE to Palantir, in part for its continued work on ELITE (Enhanced Leads Identification & Targeting for Enforcement), which we revealed in January to be the Palantir tool ICE uses to find neighborhoods to raid. Read about it:
Scammers are trying to capitalize on people’s revulsion to ICE by coming up with strategies that would cause users to quickly log into their accounts. In reality, clients would be revealing their username and password to hackers.

new phishing tactic is to send outrageous emails to corporate clients saying a piece of software they use is going to edit their account to tell their customers that they support ICE:

‘How ghoulish.’ The depravity economy moves into the nuclear war business.
Polymarket CEO Shayne Coplan has repeatedly called the site “the future of news,” and has suggested that prediction markets give the public a more clear picture of events because money is on the line. The reality is that the financial incentives pervert reality.
“As a citizen, it seems dangerous to enable people in power to place bets anonymously on things that might happen, creating an incentive to act on a basis of personal gain and not the national interest."
Polymarket doesn’t often balk at bets on violence and war. But it just pulled a market betting on nuclear war in 2026. Too dramatic?
This comes as its CEO repeatedly called the site "the future of news" and continues to allow bets on war and death in Ukraine and Iran.
super odd. Polymarket was hosting a bet on the possibility of a nuclear detonation in 2026 and it's now "archived" it. You can't view it anymore.
