I write about the Franklin Expedition and other parts of history heavy on the “doomed” and “ill-fated” side of things. I also enjoy petting cats in Victorian cemeteries. Humanitarian. She/They. #MDANT. #NUJ. #NoTerfs. https://finger-post.blog

The coat of arms of the City of Glasgow, as granted by the Lord Lyon in 1866. It incorporates a number of symbols and emblems associated with the life of Glasgow's patron saint, Kentigern (often known by his nickname, Mungo) which had been used on official seals prior to that date.

The oak tree, with Kentigern's bell hanging from it, refers to a fire which Kentigern started using one of its branches. Perched on top of it is a robin which was a favourite of young Kentigern's tutor Saint Serf and which Kentigern brought back to life after jealous fellow pupils had killed it.

The fish is a salmon, caught in the River Clyde by one of Kentigern's monks. The King of Strathclyde Rydderach Hael had given a ring to his queen Langeoreth, who had then given it to her lover. Rydderach Hael discovered he had been cuckolded and had the ring thrown into the Clyde, then demanded that his wife come to court wearing it. He hoped to humiliate her by showing that he knew of her infidelity, but Langeoreth confessed to Kentigern and he promised to help her. He ordered a monk to catch a salmon, and when the ring was found in its stomach, Langeorath was able display it on her finger.

Unforgivably, I missed the 1 March birthday of American photography pioneer Robert Cornelius. Which, tbh, is really just an excuse to post his 1839 self-portrait, widely viewed as the first selfie. And also rather hot.

Gritted my teeth and opened the three bundles of mail that I'd had stopped and held during the 8-week Maternal Calamity.

They were all full of publicité, the bulky printed spam that gets delivered daily in defiance of the "Pas de Pub" sign on my mailbox.

John McGeoch - a Greenockian, a genius, and a total hottie - died on this day in 2004. Siouxsie once said of him, "I loved the fact that I could say, ‘I want this to sound like a horse falling off a cliff’, and he would know exactly what I meant."

This - after a public consultation that came down c95% against corporate copyright theft - is a hearty move towards this government’s spineless purchased representatives needing to be hoofed in the crotch by us all, in a big queue until they get the message.

Accident #1 and Accident #2, the ultimately fatal one, were negotiated with three sets of clothing over the 5 weeks, and the only laundry happening was in a hospital sink with hand soap and swearing.

Anyway, don't skip laundry day.

I'm doing the big pile of laundry that I couldn't be bothered to do on 3rd Jan (mum had Accident #1 that evening) because I felt lazy and figured I could do it on 4th Jan (the day I ended up on the 1st available flight to Scotia).

Image is a screenshot from another site. It shows a beautiful ginger cat with a determined expression.

The text reads “A ginger tabby cat has been banned from entering a Scottish college after months of wandering its corridors, entering lessons and even allegedly setting off an alarm.”

More text notes that the cat is known as Rebel, and that this is not his real name.

Of course he’s not going to give out his real name, does he look like an amateur?

The process that led to the Holocaust didn't start with killing people.

First it made them non-people.

Then it killed them.
