Smiling person standing beside a research poster titled โTechnology and Disability Rightsโ on a display board in a bright university building with large windows.
A month ago, I started at @uniofgalwaycdlp.bsky.social. My project explores how AI is impacting the autonomy of people with disability. One month in, Iโm excited as the work starts taking shape and also a little overstimulated by the sheer volume of scholarship and activism across Europe

Screenshot of linked website โ Student Data Cooperatives: Data Governance in Higher Education
Thank you for your interest in our research. This research explores the idea of data cooperatives, which are groups where people collectively manage and control their data for mutual benefit. Specifically, it looks at studentsโ motivation and perspective on current data governance practices at the university and some alternatives, such as data cooperatives. Data cooperatives are voluntary, member-based organizations, where members pool their data together and manage it democratically for their own benefit.

Legal literacy in a linguistically diverse society
Moving to a new country involves a lot of learning. Not least important is developing an understanding of local laws. This is essential to avoid breaking the law but is also fundamental to full enjโฆ
How do we learn about our legal rights & obligations? What if we're in a new place, in a different language?
These are some of the things I've been thinking about recently. Some initial thoughts in this post on @languageonthemove.bsky.social . Fascinating discussion in the comments!

A detailed research poster titled "Insights about 'Representative Data' from a Study on Disability Human Rights in Refugee Contexts" by Philippa Duell-Piening, Ph.D., presented at the AI Fairness conference in Bologna, December 2024. The poster features key findings, including challenges in adhering to human rights law while ensuring representative data, ethical data practices, and the tension between visibility and anonymity for individuals with disabilities in refugee contexts. It incorporates a framework analyzing power dynamics and visibility, and highlights the need for autonomy-respecting data practices. The poster includes citations, a bio of the author, and illustrative examples, such as a case study of an individual who is a blind refugee speaking Tigrinya.

A woman wearing glasses, a bright red sweater, and a white collared shirt is smiling in front of a research poster. The poster is titled, *"Insights about โrepresentative dataโ from a study on disability human rights in refugee contexts: Can data truly be representative without compromising autonomy?"* The poster includes sections on representative data, disability data in refugee contexts, and a framework for analysis, with text, diagrams, and visuals. The setting appears to be a conference or academic event, with the poster pinned to a light-colored wall.
Had a fantastic day at the AI Fairness event in Bologna! Inspiring speakers from academia and industry, fascinating conversations during the breaks, and a new book for the train ride home. I also received some great feedback on my poster and have a few exciting leads to follow-up!

A lecture hall with ornate, painted ceilings depicting classical architecture and nature scenes. The front of the room features a large projector screen displaying a presentation titled "AI Fairness: Addressing Bias, Stereotypes, and Discrimination in AI Systems." Attendees are seated in rows of chairs, and a few individuals are gathered near the stage area, which includes tables, a computer setup, and the Italian flag. Natural light filters in through tall windows on both sides of the room.
So this venue is pretty amazing

A poster titled "Insights about 'representative data' from a study on disability and human rights in refugee contexts: Can data truly be representative without compromising autonomy?" is displayed on a table. The poster includes sections on representative data, disability data in refugee contexts, a framework for analysis, and implications.
