Separate thing but "making students laugh" is right up there with "students writing you years later to say thanks for teaching them" in all-time kickass prof moments

i just remember being completely mystified, as a primary school kid, at the idea that computers could talk to one another. I would open the AppleTalk control panel and just look at it, confused

this is hilarious, also I did not know the term seppo until just now (and lol'd at the first OED example "did you hear how loud that seppo was on the train?")

5yo requested galuska for dinner (Hungarian egg noodles that are like tiny bread dumplings); with the extra, thanks to a Slovak colleague who brought me a package of ground poppyseed, I made a perfect little dessert of mΓ‘kos nudli with lemon and a bit of apricot jam

also turns out Dwight Fee is a real person in the office of the Dean of Students, which is a real office at Harvard (Thomas Dunne is the dean). Dwight must not be terribly careful about two-step verification though lol

You don't often get email from dfee@fas.harvard.edu. Learn why this is important
Thomas Dunne , Dean of Students, has shared a document with you concerning a student report submitted by a parent or guardian for a student currently enrolled in one of your courses.

Please review the attached document at your earliest convenience and take any appropriate follow-up action as necessary.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,

every day, phishing scams get more sophisticated. this one figured out that I'm an academic (usually read official-sounding email from a dean) and also knows that academics aren't dumb enough to click any link: the URL is legitimate, to a real gdrive file, but *that* one has a malicious link in it

really starting to seem like AI disruption in cogsci is mainly gonna make code, tools, and analyses moderately easier, while cementing the importance of good theory and informative data

we study mindsβ€”as ever, to advance cognitive science, you gotta design elegant experiments w/ people and animals

Γ€ deep fried whole fish

we tried a new Thai place tonight and really did not expect the "deep fried snapper with chili sauce" to mean that literally (ie, the whole fish, deep fried, with a little tub of chili sauce). It's not inaccurate but.....lol

Actually kind of wild that ebay handles have been that resilient! I haven't used in ages, do they still have those feedback scores? I was v pleased to have a good one as a kid selling my old Lego sets

I think, but there's really no way to confirm, my first actual internet account was an AOL handle from like 1995 called "sammyandco"

Just for fun, elder millennials and genx-ers, how old is your oldest still-active username?

Pretty sure my oldest still standing β€” certainly not my actual oldest β€” is about to turn 25 (an ebay handle created April 2001)

My ICQ UIN is 7231680. That number is burned into my consciousness. I inadvertently learned that you could see private conversations in public chat rooms when using Telnet instead of a browser on GeoCities. I can tell you the difference in audible dial-up handshakes between 1200, 2400, 14.4 kbps modems. I needed a edu email address to join Facebook after my university was admitted. We were here at the beginning. We made social media. You wouldn't be in my Top 8. I have usernames older than you.
