Happy to report they made good on the ride credit. I guess next MTL trip we'll treat ourselves to the train over the bus.

The library isn’t the crisis, it’s the symptom Upper levels of government have failed to act with the urgency the moment demands.

"The strain shows up in our shelters, in our parks, and yes, in our public libraries. The Central Branch isn’t the crisis. It’s the warning sign."

It's one of my favourite summer bike ride destinations. Ice cream at Brett's and meander through the neighbourhood. It is a pretty special example of midcentury residential architecture and planning.

This thread infiltrated my dreams as I rushed to make up the impossibly long pencheck staircase with missing treads threatening to have the whole thing crumble beneath me.

(It was also a not so subtle metaphor for my academic career path)

Extra cold week in Ottawa but I somehow managed to walk 42km over the last few days. It's also been a busy week and walking is just generally preferable to the bus, even at -25Β° C.

Amazing to join City staff at Ottawa City Hall this week to celebrate the β€œPride of Dreams” 2026 Black History Month mural featured on 3 OC Transpo buses, created by artist Jimmy Baptiste to honour Stefan Keyes, Angelique Francis, Charmaine Hooper and Paul Barber.

An oft-repeated statistic says men apply for a job when they have 60% of the qualifications while women wait till they have 100%. Pretty sure that stat was debunked, but …

Several men seem to think that being Mayor is a suitable starter job for someone with no municipal experience. It’s not.

A motion will be discussed by Ottawa’s Built Heritage Committee that would require 90% of buildings to meet heritage protection criteria (rather than the current 25%) in order to create a Heritage Conservation District.

This would make it essentially impossible to create HCDs.

AI companies will fail. We can salvage something from the wreckage | Cory Doctorow AI is asbestos in the walls of our tech society, stuffed there by monopolists run amok. A serious fight against it must strike at its roots

Good read

"AI is the asbestos in the walls of our technological society... We will be excavating it for a generation or more."

"The purpose of AI art – and the story of AI art as a death knell for artists – is to convince the broad public that AI is amazing... to create buzz."
