I think my favorite button layout is the six button SEGA Saturn style.

Gives a lot of control, and similarly to the GameCube, the upper row having a different shape makes it easy to figure your thumb placement.

I do feel we haven't had a lot of controller innovation in the last decade plus.

As someone who primarily played on GameCube for the sixth console generation, I have mixed feelings on this.

While the Wavebird ranks as one of my all-time favorite game controllers, the layout struggled when it came to multiplatform releases. Traditiomal fighting games and Tony Hawk come to mind.
