My theory is that it doesn't matter. Artists at the end of the day want to make a living. They should be able to have a space, if they choose, that is entirely under their own control and right now if you want to be seen you have to sign up for a marketplace or make your own
If i'm a follower of an artist, and they setup their own site for monthly support, the artist would be promoting their own site correct? Sure, you miss out on the cross pollination that marketplaces can provide, but we're talking about those same sites shutting creators down for "liability" reasons.
