Spot the difference! This Gymnopus foetidus specimen from Madingley Wood is impressively well-preserved and closey resembles its original illustration. It is also one of Kew’s oldest sampled fungal holotypes, having been collected in 1795. That makes this mushroom 230 years old!

Black and white illustration of various fungi
Detail of a colour illustration of various insects and cordyceps fungi growing out of them.
Here are some books we came across during a project in the mycology library last week. Our Library and Archives collections do not only cover plants, but also fungi and lichens. Some have very beautiful illustrations. Others (like the cordyceps) are rather gruesome... 🍄🍄🟫🍄🟫 #KewLA

At stake are issues of justice and justice-mattering and how fungal epistemics ... aim to address these, cutting together-apart critiques of anthropocenic metaphor, flattened ontologies ..., and decolonizing the field of futures-thinking with non-Northern Western encounters with mycelium. A cluster of yellowish-green Common Lime leaves backlit agains a blue sky to reveal the internal structure
Much as I love spring flowers, there's something heart-achingly beautiful about emerging leaves back lit by the sun - their fleeting fragility a potent sign of renewal...

A cluster of oddly formed pearl oyster mushrooms grow off the side of a bare log, bits of punkwood stick to their caps, and their alabaster gills flow and swirl across their undersides. All photos by me
