Harper to the judge: "Your driver's license doesn't list your height and weight at birth. It doesn't list where you used to live. It identifies who you are now."
just filed my decision for the quarterfinal round of our bracket π no spoilers but it's one of the most Me essays I've written in a while
Looking to speak with trans Kansans about how SB 244 (the law affecting driver's licenses, birth certificates, bathrooms and more) is affecting your life so far and plans for the future.

Hello Friends! I need your help. I loathe asking for money On Here, but at this point I don't have much choice.
As you know, my entire practice is "name your own price/pay what you can." More than half my clients pay less than what it costs to represent them.

What's scary about this story is the surveillance it hints at. This trans woman had changed her name, legally, but chose not to change her gender marker. She was apparently flagged in the DMV system as trans and her license was invalidated under a law that supposedly only concerned gender markers.
congratulations!!!
Hello! I am a trans journalist looking to speak with trans kids and parents of trans kids across the US who have been impacted by the clinic closures---please get in touch or share!
earth worm god jim
Update/Scoopβ New guidance sent this AM to Kansas DMVs indicates licenses that previously had gender marker changed not actually invalid yet. However, internally DMV can see who is flagged, and keeping track of who has/hasn't come in to update. Seems about 300 trans/GNC ppl flagged across the state.
Iβm transgender, I live in Kansas, if you want to help rn donate to either the ACLU of Kansas or the ACE foundation in Wichita - the ACE foundation especially is the organization that will help people with money for groceries, rent, etc. More orgs also included in attached img

As transgender Kansans grapple with a challenging new reality today, and the rest of the nation watches whatβs happening in the Sunflower State, hereβs a thread of @kansasreflector.com stories and opinion pieces about SB 244. (1/15) #ksleg #trans #lgbtq
"can you believe conservatives are going this hard against such a small, persecuted minority" as a talking point loses a lot of its fire when you observe that "scapegoating small minority groups to enact shitty policy" is a load-bearing pillar of conservatism
i've included this talking point (usually in quotes) in my articles in years past but I don't anymore for all the reasons Melissa lists here. i'm interested in how many people are affected by these policies but that figure doesn't alter how bad the policies themselves are, which is to say, "very"
also, with love and respect for my friends and colleagues who do great work at large national LGBTQ orgs
...they do not need your money and they will not use it efficiently to defend the most marginalized queer and trans people
plz panic-give to the frontlines & mutual aid orgs, not the big NGOs
as long as folks are enthusiastically donating to state level trans orgs today, figured I'd reup this list the @them.us team and I put together a few years back: www.them.us/story/orgs-f...
(some info may be outdated, but use this as a jumping-off point!)
i know the situation in kansas right now is dangerous and terrifying. that said, i'm hoping to speak to someone who's had their license invalidated. i will do absolutely everything to protect your anonymity and maintain your safety.
i can be reached securely via signal at marisakabas.04
when I asked DOI for comment on this lawsuit, a rep gave me a statement about how NYC was a dangerous shithole and Mamdani and Schumer have better things to do.
Neither Mamdani or Schumer have anything to do with the lawsuit filed against DOI/NPS Tuesday. when I asked again they stopped responding
(also as a little armchair analysis, markey is my senator, and i think moves like this are very intentional on his part -- moulton is challenging for his seat this year while campaigning on markey's age, so markey is showing he still has fighting spirit with this + calling to defund DHS)
and fwiw, introducing actual legislation to do any of this stuff would itself be functionally symbolic in this congress. but I do want to caution folks that despite its name, the trans bill of rights is not really a "bill" -- it's a statement of intent you should hold its sponsors to in the future
to be clear I still think this is a good move. dems like Jayapal and Markey should press their colleagues to go on the record about issues like this (seth moulton is a cosponsor this year!), and it's good for the party overall to clearly and publicly reject GOP framing on trans + intersex rights
apart from the Trump 2.0 items, much of the language is unchanged from the 2023 version, which never got a floor vote

not to be a huge downer -- because there are reasons to like this! -- but the TBOR is still a nonbinding resolution. even if it did pass the House, its function is to lay out jayapal's "comprehensive vision" rather than materially change the political reality for trans and intersex people
all Iβll add is Bondi, as Florida AG, used βfighting sex traffickingβ to elevate herselfβempowering cops at the expense of survivors. long before Trump she was like this
Hi folks. We're dropping our paywall on this story about the scourge of AI pitches for the day, so give it a read and share widely. www.coyotemedia.org/how-coyote-a...
that one's a solid gold bummer for sure, even more so than pulling teeth π
