A paragraph demonstrating a technique called "Zip-top", where the top-half of letters are boldened to supposedly improve legibility. Taken from Photo-Lettering's Alphabet Thesaurus Vol. 2 (1965). (only the top half is visible) The top half is the legible half - (only the bottom half is visible) - the bottom half is much more difficult to read. (normal) So we asked ourselves: Could legibility and reading speed be improved by highlighting the significant parts of letters - by designing them with more pronounced tops? (Zip-Top on) We tried it, and found that the heavier tops formed a "reading bar" or rail on which the eye traveled swiftly across the line. It seemed to us that readability was noticeably improved, and we liked the fresh functional appearance of the letters. The increased legibility of zip-top will be noticed chiefly in the light and medium weights of lowercase. The freshness of design, however, extends into caps and lowercase bold.

found this snippet of a technique called "zip-top" in a type specimen from 1965. they were almost right, nowadays we have dyslexic fonts that make the BOTTOM thicker rather than the top
