Interviewing high school students for admissions to my alma mater, I'm struck by how dishonest one is required to be these days in order to comply with the law. In all seriousness, kudos to our admissions department for preparing us for this.

Friday, Feb. 6 is the last day to sign up for the lottery to be part of the historic LA Charter Assembly. Participants will be paid for their time, and help decide on changes to size and structure of the Los Angeles City Council. If you received this card in the mail, sign-up instructions are on it.
Nine years ago, I found myself hiking through a Kentucky forest foraging for ginseng with my elderly mom. It was a profound experience, and it got me thinking about the tension between self-reliance and interdependence. fasterthan20.com/2025/11/fora...
I'm old school competitive. I loved the bitter sports rivalries of my day. But I like this better. www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/...
"I may be a Satan-empowered beast with 10 horns and seven heads. I may rise from the sea, take over the world, charismatically criticize God and Christ, persecute believers, and inspire people to tattoo '666' on themselves.
"But at least I’m no tech bro." —Antichrist in response to Peter Thiel
On a related note, I'm also intrigued by the potential for AI to replace traditional strategy consultants, as @jamescham.bsky.social has been talking about for as long as I can remember (even before GPT-3).
My guess is that an experienced engineer could have produced this simple, non-production quality app in about the same amount of time (an hour), but it would be at least an order of magnitude more expensive. There are clearly tradeoffs, but I wonder when the Bitter Lesson comes into play here.
I haven't played with Context Engineering or vibe coding, so it was interesting to get to watch this. I've been enjoying what @jonudell.bsky.social, @lmorchard.com, Harper Reed, and others have been saying on these topics, though.
My friend, William, created a screencast of him using AI to write an app. That app happens to be for one of my collaboration workouts! www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJBt...
I agree! I've just started working through episodes, and I thought @rabble.nz's interview with @yoyoel.com was particularly good.

I also want to shout out Joe Mathew's piece on the Eaton wildfires, which I mention in my addendum. It's raw and rough, but it's the truth we need to be facing right now.
This was my first professional blog post in four years. It was hard to write, but I'm glad it's out there now. I also shared some addendums to the piece in my personal blog.
"Faith, it turns out, is also a muscle. I remember why I’m doing my work.... I want people to understand that taking time to make small things — however trivial they might seem — builds our muscles, our faith, our resilience. All of these things are what make big visions possible."
Please consider joining a virtual chat with Dan about his new book and telling a friend! Here’s the invite: lu.ma/gk9j5v06

Ian Leslie's notes on growing older, especially the gap between how old we feel and how old we actually are, was very resonant. www.ian-leslie.com/p/27-notes-o... H/T to @chriscorrigan.mstdn.ca.ap.brid.gy, who continues to have one of the best blogs on group process, complexity, and life in general.
@lizneeley.bsky.social's Meeting the Moment missives are always good, but this week's was particularly resonant. Make sense of things with your people, preferably over good food. Talk through potentially difficult decisions and other things that worry you. Do it in small doses. This is the work.
Moving op/ed from my friend, Pete Forsyth, about the two victims of the 2022 Normandale Park shooting in Portland, about our narratives about protest, and about what true accountability and improvement should look like.
Very excited for my third cohort coming up this Fall. I hope you'll join me. Please spread the word!
I have a new piece out about how the House reconciliation bill will harm rural households.
Not only will it rural folks lose health coverage & food access, hospitals are more likely to close and businesses will struggle.
All for a tax cut skewed towards the wealthy.

I love it when I get to talk to product folks for the tools that I use. I feel valued as a customer (especially as a small-scale user), and I learn a lot too. Shout out to @discourse.org for this practice and for taking time to talk with me today!
@lmorchard.com has been blogging like crazy recently, and I've been loving it. Inspired to copy how he's been doing it. blog.lmorchard.com/2025/06/02/o...

A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.
Wait, Sarah Strong is Allison Feaster’s daughter?! Explains a lot. andscape.com/features/uco...
How rich is the soil where your Tidy Tips are? I've noticed that wildflowers from the nursery often have bigger leaves with exaggerated features because of the regular fertilizer. Maybe something similar is happening with yours? Regardless, they're purty, and I hope they stay happy in that spot!
