I like Doctor Who, running, Freak Zone music, and the Scottish Green Party, and I love my cat Marvin and my wife Helen. (he/him).

It was fantastic, because I'd borrowed "Ceremony" and "Procession" in 1982 and not heard them since, finally owned "Blue Monday" and heard "State of the Nation" for the first time. It all sounded so clean and sharp.

I think the first CDs I bought, in Autumn 1988, were:

The Dark Side of the Moon
A Momentary Lapse of Reason
Outrider (J. Page)
Wind & Wuthering
Seconds Out
The Whole Story
Substance
Force Majeure

Sunny afternoon, so I took a late '80s Tangerine Dream playlist out for my very gently run. Dreamy nostalgia, remembering learning about "Neuromancer" and "The Handmaid's Tale" on Usenet at work, and buying my first CD player with my first month's graduate salary.

I hated the change to regular uniform order, and the inconsistency between their cub packs and mine. And the total lack of explanation for what Thinking Day was.

This World Book Day thing, going to school dressed differently, has unearthed a memory from primary school in the seventies when some of the kids came in their Brownie or Cub uniforms, saying it was Thinking Day. I was a cub and had never heard of it, which caused unpleasant dissonance.

Running is a very affordable way to exercise. Until you become obsessed with doing it "better". My 50-minute tempo session today involved the consumption of drinks and gels that would have cost Β£9.16 if I'd paid RRP for them. AND IT WAS WORTH IT.

No one else at school would be able to visually recognise any character from a book I'd read, so it would be a bit pointless. "Why are you wearing a space suit, David?" "I'm Chris Godfrey from 'Blast Off At Woomera' by Hugh Walters, sir."

I remember trying to order this from the local newsagent but I'd missed this issue. It's a vivid reminder of how hard I'd try to get a magazine with some pictures in from DW. That was a big deal then. Now I just think "Sorenson with lippy looks like David Walliams."

I was going to say that Colin had been caught looking like "That's Life"-era Paul Heiney in in that picture, but having looked to check that I'm talking about the right one of Esther's Boys, I'm delighted to see that he's become a Vulcan in his retirement.

Cover of the novelisation of the unmade Doctor Who serial "The Nightmare Fair" featuring the words "Space Mountain" on the cover.

Was it this, I wonder? Was the event named after a feature in an unmade story? There had after all been a fanzine called "Shada" a decade earlier, edited by a prince amongst men and featuring the best and brightest up and coming young contributors....
It's quite a design, this cover, isn't it?

But there were some events in the nineties whose names had no provenance whatsoever as far as I could see. I can't guess where "Honeycomb" came from. But "Space Mountain" takes the biscuit. Why name your Doctor Who event after an indoor space themed rollercoaster ride at a Disney park? 3/?

It was OK if they were in some way descriptive of the event, like DWASocial, or TenCon. Even FALCon made sense (Fan Aid Legacy Convention) although that leads to the deeper solipsism of Doctor Who fans calling things "Fan Aid" or "The Fan Show" or "Fan Olympiad" which omits what they're fans of. 2/?

01.03.2026 16:23 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

In the nineties when I returned to DW social fandom I found that the names of conventions didn't make sense any more. They used to be called things like "Panopticon" or "Interface" which could be traced to words used on screen in the series. Now they weren't, always. 1/?

Manchester Marathon training week 11 of 18 complete. I've loved it this week; hill repeats, threshold intervals, and foundation runs that tell me I'm unmistakably getting stronger and faster. 5 runs, 5h35m, 34.8 miles. The fatigue of recent weeks is lifting. My mood is strongly tied to how I run.

It's been a challenging week. We lost a friend on Monday, to cancer. Both of us are of the "keep buggering on" persuasion, and have stayed busy and not canceled anything. Only today during "I Swear", a story of unjustly not having the life one might, did I start to respond with recognisable grief.
