Check out this new report! Corporate capture of our media is why we need media interventions not just at the level of storytelling & messaging but at the deeper level of community/worker ownership & democratic control.

What Is the Solidarity Economy?Β  β€” Shelterforce A growing movement is reshaping how people work and live together. Our new column highlights these practicesβ€”and explains why they matter.

The bottom 90% of U.S. workers earn ~$28,000 less per year than they would have in the 1970s income system.

What if we organized the economy differently?

Bed-Stuy bike shop reopens as worker cooperative The bike shop has provided bike services to the community since 2021 and is now run by five people, who all have an equal share in the business.

This bike shop reopened as a worker-owned cooperative in Brooklyn, New York City. Now its workers own the store and have direct control over their schedule, compensation, and working conditions.

This kind of freedom is possible for every working person. It's called economic democracy, and it works.

Economic democracy is the path forward.

Support the growing number of democratic and worker-owned media organizations for a future where democracy isn't just a slogan.

Journalism coops seem utopian. What’s it like working in one? "If I was less self-directed, I'd probably be freaking out."

Journalism coops give me β€” and most of the journalists I know β€” a lot of hope for the industry. But I've been curious: What's it like to actually work at one? I spent the last few months talking to a bunch of brilliant worker-owners to find out.

A new poll finds that 1 in 4 Minnesota voters took part in the Jan 23 shutdown against ICE, or have a loved one who did. Of those, 38% DID NOT WORK, either because they made the choice to stay out, or their workplaces closed. By me, @thomasbirm.bsky.social, @bloomekatz.bsky.social

The people of Minnesota have executed one of the most impressive civil resistance campaigns I can remember:

- Organized a city wide general strike
- Maintained nonviolent discipline amidst violence
- Mobilized 10,000s in subzero temps to protest and watch ICE
- Flipped public opinion against ICE
