Two super famous works among social scientists: Maurer's book "The Big Con" and Goffman's essay "Cooling the Mark Out."

Most of the key research on this phenomenon has been conducted in Sociology.

I've been publishing articles on the subject for ~11 years:

Try searching on "fraud" instead. There's a lot.

List of multiple Guardian articles since 2017 involving UK Home Office attempts to deport academics employed at Oxford--or to deport their young children or spouses--on various pretexts.

List of multiple Guardian articles since 2017 involving UK Home Office attempts to deport academics employed at Oxford--or to deport their young children or spouses--on various pretexts.

There's a decade-long stack of articles abt this in the @theguardian.com, all involving the Home Office threatening different academics employed at the University of Oxford with either immediate deportation of themselves, or of their children, spouses, etc. It's not a one-off thing, but a pattern.

No, their university and research funding is horrendous and there have been horror stories for years about British immigration authorities threatening to deport respected foreign academics employed even at the Oxbridge institutions--which you think could muster some lawyers to fend off the threats.

Problem is: CA didn't fund universities & research well to begin with, then recent ntl leaders *slashed* what little funding the unis & research centers got. This is happening in many other countries, too, so there's no nation fin able to receive the exodus of scientists & scholars. Foolish leaders.

Where do they plan to go?

As an immigrant in Denmark--which REALLY hates foreigners, of all colors & religions--I used to have this convo with my fellow immigrant colleagues every few months starting ~2016.

The list of places where we could do our jobs & raise our kids in peace has shrunk to ~2.

So, obviously this isn’t true. But if the CEO actually believes this nonsense, it implies he thinks maybe he’s enslaving a sentient being that has the capacity to feel emotional distress. And he hasn’t immediately halted operations to suss out how to resolve that?

FL deems intro textbooks in my discipline illegal.

It's bc Sociology analyzes systems...it gives people the practical thinking tools to dismantle the master's house.

As a fmr English Lit major, Sociology is the most powerful thing I've ever learned. I see why the Temu Savonarolas are scared of it.

No. Peter Thiel cannot be allowed to annex the National Science Foundation via this Palantir proxy.

It would be like putting a pyromaniac in charge of the Library of Alexandria: destruction of a global treasure with no "undo" button.

This is a "to the barricades" moment.

I know it's intentional!

What I'm asking--having never read that item from Baudrillard--is whether he talks about the connection explicitly.

Because while any French reader would instantly recognize Baudrillard's callback to Giradoux, non-franophone readers probably wouldn't.

Does Baudrillard talk about his book's title being a play on the famous 1930s play about WW1, "La Guerre de Troie N'Aura Pas Lieu" ("The Trojan War Will Not Take Place")?

Seems like a reasonable conclusion after tens of millions preferred voting for a rapist to voting for a woman--twice.

Remember how he hated his FBI job because he had to put on pants and show up? He would, at most, consent to be Director of Deez Nuts.

Also: everyone in the GOP knows leading DHS/ICE is a no-win job that will result in being hated by tens of millions of Americans & probably end up in the Hague.

Marky Twonames is the only guy dumb enough to take that poisoned chalice Trump is handing him and chug it like a frat party punch bowl.

The treat menu is:

* misogyny
* anti-Semitism
* racism
* homo- and trans-phobia

Dems get to pick one in a candidate.

MAGAts get 3+ treats in each candidate...that's why so many of them will never vote Dem. Treat deficit.

That clip of Timothee Chalamet being like β€œno one watches the opera or ballet” is wild and I am dying over every ballet and opera acct (correctly) being like β€œwe’ve been here for hundreds of years before you and we’ll be here for hundreds of years after you” lmao
