I think my main problem is social media is absolutely not a good source of news, no matter who you hang out with. Even if the information is truthful, it always comes with at the very least some panicky side text that makes it worse, and at worse, a long chain of other people panicking together.

Yes, I agree. But we have to admit we got complacent with the convenience of big centralized services. Everyone wants to go back to forums in theory but that would mean having to create accounts for every single community you join, and not being able to easily organize them.
