I'm honored to be publishing this piece with Vanderbilt Psych Prof Sarah Brown-Schmidt in volume 112 of the Virginia Law Review. In this empirical evidence law and cognitive science article, we identify the risks posed by "hear-witnesses" who inaccurately recall and recount statements at trial.
HAPPENING NOW: Thousands of DC high schools students have walked out to demand ICE OUT of our communities. Theyβre gathering at the Lincoln Memorial in an incredible show of power and unity. #ICEout #endtheoccupation #stopcooperation
The final witness of today's MPD Oversight Hearing is Interim Chief Jeffery Carroll. Here are Councilmembers' questions and his responses. π§΅

Let's fight misinformation, help good journalists to make a decent living, and stick a big ol' finger in Jeff Bezos' eye.
The room wasnβt just full...it was heard π
Our 2nd Youth Town Hall of 2026 brought together powerful DC youth to speak truth, share lived experiences, & challenge the systems shaping their futures.
From education to safety to opportunity, our youth showed up with clarity, courage, and solutions.
Professor @dorothyabrown.bsky.social, L'83, wrote Getting to Reparations for skeptics β because a few years ago, she was one. After researching the racial wealth gap, she changed her mind. Her new book lays out the legal roadmap. Read our full interview: https://bit.ly/4tVFgM8
We cannot balance this yearβs budget on the backs of working class and low-income residents. Thank you to everyone who joined the Rally for DC Families to make it clear that if and when we face tough budget choices, we wonβt put the Districtβs most vulnerable neighbors on the chopping block first.
Mia Valentina Paz Faria A 7-year-old from Venezuela who was living in Austin, Texas Detained for 70 days βI donβt want to be in this place I want to go to my school.β
UPDATE: Staff at the ICE concentration camp in Dilley, Texas have begun raiding the dormitories of kids and their parents to confiscate and destroy letters from the children. This is in response to the ace reporting by @micarosenberg et al for ProPublica:
βI donβt want to be in this place I want to go to my school.β

Today, after @propublica.org published this story, the camp was raided to confiscate letters from the children.

Sad local news: Longtime D.C. religious leader and civic activist Graylan Hagler has passed away, per his church. He was active in local politics; he ran for D.C. Council and was frequently lobbying lawmakers for progressive causes. He was a force. RIP.
𧡠1/ Itβs hard to find hope amidst so much collapse.
But in the wreckage of todayβs crises, people are also powering solutions β and The 51st, backed by the community of D.C., is one of them.
Will you help us build a local newsroom that a billionaire canβt break?
I was just doing some research on how DCs 1960s integration efforts were hamstrung by lack of statehood--the largely Black city was run by southern segregationists in congress. For awhile the Senate subcommittee that dealt with the DC budget was run by former KKK member Senator Robert Byrd. History!
At least 4 homeless folks froze to death in DC during the recent winter storm.
In the capital of the richest country in the world.
Where we're spending $1.65 million a day to pay for the Nat'l guard to do nothing.
It does not have to be this way.
None of the federal actions are about improving public safety, facilitating good government, or creating a thriving DC. Reason # 600,000,000 why the District needs to be a state.
$600 million is also the size of the hole that the congressional disapproval resolution is about to create in DC's budget. 51st.news/republican-b...
TANF is facing looming cuts in the District. 51st.news/opinion-dc-r...
The $1.65 million a day spent on the National Guard deployment is about $600 million annualized. For comparison, the approved FY26 budget for Economic Security Services, which includes TANF, is $305 million.
βIf my children canβt eat, they canβt go to school and be productive.β -a DC mother, speaking on the importance of TANF.
The planned changes to the TANF program will impact 15,000 children, pushing them deeper into poverty.

Pretty excited for this: I'm doing an AMA over on the D.C. subreddit on Tuesday afternoon! (It's a great community, so very excited about.) So jump on over and ask any questions about D.C. politics, nerdy government stuff, pro cycling, whatever. www.reddit.com/r/washington...
I will simply never recover from reading this sentence:
"Since Georgia implemented work requirements in 2020, they have spent twice as much on Deloitte consultants and administrative costs as on healthcare for people."
Screenshot of a TikTok video with error message at top saying βyour video is under review and canβt be shared right now.β
This morning, I recorded a video on TikTok about why DHSβs arguments for the power to enter homes without judicial warrants in immigration cases are bunk.
Nine hours later, TikTok still says my video is βunder review,β and canβt be shared.

To everyone on the ground in Minnesota, I just want to say-I won't tell you to stay safe because I know there's no way to keep yourself safe from Trump's secret police.
But I will say I love you and I am proud of you.
NEW: We are permanently shutting down two nonprofits that exploited DC kids and misled residents.
Maryland Youth Club and Virginia Youth Club recruited children from low-income neighborhoods to sell candy door-to-door to fund fake scholarships.
Instead, executives illegally pocketed the money.
Meet the Washingtonians of the Year: ten locals who made our region better in 2025.
Interesting: D.C. Police Chief Jeffery Carroll is not responding to detailed written questions from the D.C. Council about MPD's cooperation with federal agencies on immigration enforcement.
"The council and the public need answers to these questions," says Ward 2 Councilmember Brooke Pinto today.
Federal agents patrolling in D.C. donβt follow the same protocols as MPD officers βΒ and have different training, levels of experience working in cities, and political leaders to answer to.
