Fabulous work! And thank you for the generous review. I couldn’t help but think about Cyril Olivier’s Le Vice ou le Vertu has an excellent book on the regulation of sexuality under Vichy. It’s already 20 years old, though.

Great @theconversation.com Q&A by @carolinesequin.bsky.social on her award-winning "Desiring Whiteness" that "explores the intertwined histories of commercial sex work and racial politics in France and the French colonial empire, particularly in Senegal."

To my great dislike, I’m doing a lot of blue book exams and even considering oral exams for one of my courses, although I have 30+ students so it would be quite time consuming. Of course, this format is problematic to test students’ analytical thinking and writing skills

May I humbly suggest my recently published book, Desiring Whiteness? It focuses on the experiences of the white women who sold sex and ran brothels in France and its empire in the century following the abolition of slavery. www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9781501...
Tips to keep democracy alive in 2025:
1. Be Brave. Avoid helpless/hopeless talk. Authoritarians want you to feel powerless because it makes their work easier. Courage, faith, and optimism are essential. Fascism feeds on cynicism and pessimism. Starve it.

Desiring Whiteness traces the rise and fall of the "French system" in the century following the abolition of slavery. The French system was a prostitution regime that tolerated brothels and imposed various restrictive measures on the women deemed prostitutes. 2/
