So, when people ask me if I'm afraid of a Chinese invasion, I tell them that China won't invade when it feels it has other options. Buying a government is much cheaper than invasion. The military threats are largely a psyop to make capitulation seem like the rational choice.
Taiwanese understand this. That's why we had the Sunflower Movement and then the Bluebird Movement. But the international press continues to treat the story as China vs. Taiwan, not about preserving democracy.
Yes, they will sometimes talk of politicians as being "pro China," but that doesn't really capture the situation. What they should be saying is "anti-democratic." When most Taiwanese support the "status quo," the KMT can only push for unification by undermining democracy.
As long as the Western press continues to treat the KMT as a regular political party, it will never get the story of Taiwan straight. [See what I did there? 😜] China doesn't need to invade if it has one of the two ruling political parties in its pocket.
Oh no!

Herblock was not a fan of Generalissimo Chiang, who fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing the Chinese civil war. The WaPo editorial cartoonist thought him corrupt and that the US military might've "given Chiang the atom bomb but we were afraid he'd sell it."

Admirers of Liszt would swarm over him . . . Women would try to get locks of his hair, and whenever he broke a piano string, admirers would try to obtain it in order to make a bracelet. Some female admirers would even carry glass phials into which they poured his coffee dregs.
TIL that long before Beatlemania there was Lisztomania!
Lisztomania or Liszt fever was the intense fan frenzy directed toward Hungarian composer Franz Liszt during his performances.

True. And even the political discourse here is very US-centric. Taiwanese are all on threads as well. I really don’t like Threads, but it is much more international.

I've never before wondered if I will be allowed to vote in a US election.

August 18, 2025 President Trump Quips About Canceling 2028 Elections If U.S. Is At War During an Oval Office meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on ending the war with Russia, President Trump appears to imply that the 2028 elections could be cancelled if the U.S. is at war. “During the war, you can't have elections? So let me just see, three and a half years from now, if we happen to be in a war with somebody, no more elections? That's good," Mr. Trump says in response to the Ukrainian leader's comments on committing to holding elections after the war with Russia is over. (Image of Zelensky at White House)
Trump has a habit of saying the quiet parts out loud.
==A responsible American president could make a plausible argument for further action against Iran.== The core of this argument would need to be a clear explanation of the goals — whether they were limited to denying Iran a nuclear weapon or extended to more ambitious aims, like ending its support for terrorist groups — as well as the justification for attacking now. This strategy would involve a promise to seek approval from Congress and to collaborate with international allies.
Oh, the NY Times ... you just couldn't help yourselves, could you?
I love Fruit Chan's films from that era!
I feel that this film isn't about what most people think it is about. It is basically a Coen brothers tribute film.
