β€˜No one deserves this’: Beaverton father dies after deportation to Mexico A Beaverton family is grieving after the father, who was detained and deported by ICE, has now died.

This 53 year old man who lived in my neighborhood w/no criminal record & who had been in the US for 30 years, was detained and thrown into a cold cell for days, caught pneumonia and COVID there and deported.

He finally died.

I am so angry.

πŸ‘€The federal judges in West Virginia, where ICE has been pulling over and detaining people on the freeway, are literally screaming about ICE's tactics.

Chuck Schumer spectacularly failed the β€œvote blue no matter who” test and should be hounded from office

the housing is obviously more affordable than blue state housing - the biggest thing that matters here are the relative prices and wages

blue states under built relative to red states and now will pay the price while their citizens continue to put their heads in the sand about supply and demand

Doesn’t change congress, how are you gonna get the votes?

There are tons of well supported policy interventions that are far more ambitious and β€œobvious” than what the democrats have been able to deliver for over a decade.

15.02.2026 22:59 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

the pushback here is that we may need even more dramatic improvements to break through. Congestion pricing was well-supported by theory but not politically popular until implementation. Shifting income taxes to land value taxes could be similarly dramatic. or finally delivering a public option.

It’s kinda the old kind of false consciousness! Who owns social media?

15.02.2026 21:56 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

If voters can’t actually evaluate material conditions politics becomes detached from materialism which is bad for anyone but the rich imo

this is not his argument, if i read him right, his argument is that social media makes many people unable to process what issues are real at scale or not and that this is a problem for people who are serious about democracy

15.02.2026 21:53 πŸ‘ 14 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

What I’m getting at is that I trust Matt to debunk bad interpretation of economic statistics so I wonder what his positive interpretation is, in the sense of what problems could we start shouting about that he’d say β€œyup that is a huge problem”

Unemployment, welfare he’s said I imagine housing too

15.02.2026 21:03 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

it’s completely normal for a data source to be 1 year out of date

And wills argument has been ongoing since 2022 lmao!

So unless you think his social media theory is fine in 2023/24 but suddenly became wrong in 25 you were being a pedant

15.02.2026 20:55 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Have you published a blog or paper anywhere sort of outlining what you consider to be the biggest β€œreal” economic drags on the average persons finances right now? I’m always happy to see you correcting data misuse but I’m curious what you consider to be the steelman of β€œpeople are struggling”

if you wanna mix sources (this one is the bureau of labor statistics) it was a decent size drop in 2025 to return to the overall trend of slow decline

idk why we believe in manufacturing consent wrt american imperialism but not about the economic management of democratic presidents. social media/the news media absolutely tip the scales to prime people against democrats and the left broadly

this doesn't contradict will's point. he said people will take 1 example of price shocks and then apply it to the whole of a sector if prompted by the news media.

inflation can make prices go up but if wages are keeping up we'd expect % spent on food to be stable, and it largely is.
