Newcastle pubs ban AI art from breweries to protect local creatives As two pubs in Newcastle ban AI art, artists discuss the impact it can have on creatives.

"If I was to use ChatGPT for my designs rather than our designer Sean, that's taking money out of the local area into the hands of a multibillionaire ... removing value from the local community and local artists [and] into the hands of some of the richest people in the world."

It really does feel like a mere few dozen people are destroying the entirety of the world.

I feel like midlist SFF is both vitally important and uniquely threatened right now because the midlist is where you find most of the queer, PoC, and otherwise marginalized authors. As well as a lot of really exciting books trying new things! Stuff that's not a "safe bet" but often a great read

At the AI conference, Altman also downplayed concerns about the water datacenters require.

“Water is totally fake. It used to be true. We used to do evaporative cooling in datacenters, but now … we don’t do that,” Altman said. “You see things on the internet, [like]: ‘Don’t use ChatGPT. It’s 17 gallons of water for each query or whatever.’ This is completely untrue – totally insane.”

CNBC reported that “some newer data centers no longer rely on water at all”.

The director of the Southern New Hampshire University office of sustainability, Mike Weinstein, told the Guardian he was skeptical of the argument from Altman and other AI advocates that the power such infrastructure demands is justified because the technology will help alleviate global problems.

Effective Altruist blogger Andy Masley is single-handedly responsible for creating this scoffing line among billionaire tech goblins (notably a bunch of leftist accounts here seem to repeat it too)

Water consumption issues are not just real: they're crippling

In a sane world, our universities would be suing this company into the ground.

Unfortunately, many of them probably think in order to stay "relevant" or whatever, they need to develop partnerships with these plagiarism-as-a-service companies instead

British Museum removes the word 'Palestine' from ancient displays Information placards in the ancient Middle East gallery have been changed.

Complete and utter insanity in the capitulation to the Zionist lobby.

The British Museum besides stealing West Asian and Palestinian history is now actively erasing it.

Someone has sure already made this observation but the fact they can convert all those empty warehouses into prison camps means they could have converted them into housing, community centers, job training centers or, hell, libraries or schools all along. It’s always a matter of will not resources.

Why are so many platforms punishing adults for wanting to be adults instead of just making parental controls and telling parents to monitor their own kids.

Why is discord rolling out a "teen by default" mandatory ID system. Why the fuck do you need that information. Why are you making this my issue

A drawing of a tiny deer-like creature known as a sycafawn. It has a large set of horns that resemble sycamore seeds. Its entire body is covered in leaf-like structures that are green, yellow and pale orange in colour.

Doodled up a little #Flowerpunk species, the sycafawn!

One of the tiniest members of the unguligrowth group of magical creatures, they reach a height of just a few inches. They live in and around sycamore trees as the name suggests, disguising themselves as seeds.

what are we reading???? I just finished Lia Amador's wonderfully Cuban diaspora-inflected rom-com Witch You Would and then somehow fell into a partial Wimsey reread, though I've got Meg Elison's forthcoming Founding Fathers queued up too.

it's like our entire sense of morality has been filtered through the act of consumption, and the highest good we can imagine is feeling good and clean and pure as individuals, unpolluted by the obvious evil are around us

meanwhile, real change requires the kind of work you need a drink after

I have yet to see any evidence that there is a market for AI-generated books outside of people being tricked into thinking they are not AI-generated books. AKA, it is a project of scamming and deceiving people, and really should be treated as fraud

“Good afternoon. My name is [redacted] and my wife and I have been at OMDC since April 15 2025,” reads a handwritten note, wrapped around a lotion bottle that was thrown by a man held captive inside the Otay Mesa Detention Center (OMDC) on Sunday.

“It’s cold here all the time and the food is poor,” the missive continues. “For 280 days we haven’t eaten a single piece of fruit, banana, apple, orange, or anything fresh. We are all in one big room with no doors or windows. We can’t see any grass or trees. We are all constantly sick.”
