Great to see @anahlcq.bsky.social's brilliant story on France's PMU bars getting some solid and deserved praise in this week's @boakandbailey.bsky.social roundup.

A new article by @anahlcq.bsky.social for Pellicle, superb reading as ever.
“In these places, everyone has a role: the funny guy, the musician…You feel good there, seen, valued, recognized.”

There is a PMU, L’hippocampe, 20 minutes from where we are staying in Britanny in August 🤔
"The bar PMU is the epitome of the rade. These spaces...don’t look good enough for an aesthetically pleasing Instagram feed. Their history, deeply rooted in the working class, labour struggles, and immigrant communities, is not designed for glossy consumption."

I miss old beer/spirits/cocktail Twitter where I could say something like "all whiskey is beer turned into a whiskey," walk away, and come back to World War III, but only metaphorically.
(My favorite thing we made in brewing school was an eau de vie using a hefeweizen we ran out of time to drink.)
Fabulous top to bottom.
One reason why I spend money to support @pelliclemag.com.
This is a wonderful piece.
PMUs are a unique French institution. Somewhere between betting shops, cafés, bars and social clubs, they exist in every town. People use them, or staunchly avoid them. Hipsters are creeping in.
@anahlcq.bsky.social tells the full story.

There was a PMU in the mountain village where I lived in France. €10 two course menu changed daily and was always great with a glass of wine or a small beer. It was a second home to many in the area, a real hive of activity. So of course someone bought it & turned it into a crap touristy restaurant
“The idea that only the upper class can make a place attractive is nothing but class contempt dressed up as taste.”
Perfect quote right there (and the name of Bouazzouni's book is the cherry on top).
Not a huge gambling fan myself (KM) but the centrality of these bars to their local communities was really fascinating to learn about!
