I'm 3 weeks out from surgery. Recovery was quite easy; once I left the hospital I felt fine and was just on ibuprofen and antibiotics

The fact that this good copyright policy is now being exploited to protect AI slop is deeply upsetting to me. Tech continues to find new and innovative ways to screw artists. I'm so glad I don't work in tech anymore 7/7
So basically the creators of these songs pay a few cents to the original artist once per song, but get paid for their low-effort cover per stream. As we know, streaming revenues are quite low. But if you can pump out thousands of these all the sudden you can be making some money 6/
What sucks is the mechanical license is a good thing for musicians. It allows artists to perform covers in public without worrying about retribution from the original artist. It avoids a lot of the mess we see with DMCA takedowns for example, often used maliciously 5/
The grift exploits the mechanical license, which pertains to covers. Unlike copyrights of recordings, which pay royalties per performance (e.g. stream), covers pay a royalty per recording (i.e. song). In the US, the fee is low and does not require permission from the rights holder 4/
Basically any song that charted in the last 40 years has been done at least once. Regardless of source or destination genre 3/
Usually the vocals are clearly synthetic, either vocaloid or completely AI generated tracks. Often the instruments, particularly the drums are just sample packs, but sometimes (especially in the jazz ones) seem to have been played by humans 2/
One thing I've heard a lot of while in Spain over the past two weeks is AI slop covers of well-known songs. They tend to fall into genres like bossa nova, jazz, or electronica and are extremely formulaic, always at the same tempo with minimal instrumentation 1/
