My condolences to you and the others he leaves behind!
It's stunning how ignorant the DOGE bros were who were sent into agencies. Justin Fox cannot even articulate in his own words what his "present understanding of DEI" is: he can't even formulate a coherent sentence about it. I wouldn't hire him for basic tech support. #NEH

How much does flying down the Red Sea or the east coast of Africa, then hanging a left, add to their flight time? Does the flight controller capacity to handle them exist? I have no idea.
Shanghai, Hong Kong, Seoul, Taipei will probably suffer the most if the Middle East routes are closed.
Every flight I have taken from Japan to Europe in the last four years has gone through the Bering Strait, adding several hours of flight time in which the destination doesn't get closer, or the southern route, which isn't much better but opens options.
A striking digital composite that bridges two centuries of scientific history. On the left, a colorized version of the famous 1842 oil painting shows Mary Anning looking resolute in her practical cloak and bonnet, holding her geological hammer. On the right, the image transitions into a modern, high-definition photograph of a complete Ichthyosaurus fossil from a museum exhibition. The fossilized skeleton is embedded in dark, textured shale, showing the creature's long snout, massive ribcage, and distinctive paddles. The composite creates a "then and now" effect, placing the 19th-century pioneer right next to the raw evidence that proved the world was once ruled by extinct reptiles. The lighting on the colorized painting is matched to the museum spotlights on the fossil, making it look as though Anning is standing inside the display itself. This unique artwork highlights her role as the woman who bridged the gap between myth and the modern science of paleontology. Digital composite by Seriously Scientific.
Remembering Mary Anning on International Women's Day!
In the 1800s, the word "dinosaur" didn't even exist.
With just a hammer and chisel, Mary unearthed "sea monsters" from shale cliffs, providing the raw evidence that proved extinction and founded the science of paleontology! ๐ฆโ๏ธ #WomenInScience

THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!
Renee Good was also shot at point-blank range through her side window by an ICE agent who was in no danger
Alex Pretti wasnโt in a car, but he too was shot at point-blank range by an ICE agent who was in no danger
It seems every time ICE kills someone they lie to cover up shooting innocent people

A screenshot of a YouTube video by AP entitled: LIVE: Trump participates in a Saving College Sports roundtable. Trump is seated at a table with a big red carpet behind him holding his hands up in a shrug. Captions: "I'm here as long as you need me. They came to me, they said"
Over 1000 people are dead in the Iran war Trump started for no reason. Crude oil futures spiked: the largest weekly increase on record. 92,000 jobs lost last month. Inflation creeping upwards
Trump has spent the last 1.5 hrs at a "Saving College Sports" roundtable and yes, it is still going
CNN just briefly went to Trump talking live, and it was nonsensical. He complains about selective editing, but they do him a favor every time they make his thoughts sound orderly and cogent.
Ok but there should be an exponent.

In a faculty meeting on student AI & holy f the situation is just grim. Basically, it's on its to totally revise our assignment structure & pedagogy, but uni will start opening up computer lab testing centers bc students can't be trusted to take exams on computers they own without using agentic AI.
Everyone in my lab plays with AlphaGenome. It is good at what it does, but what it does is very limited, because it is only trained on data from a handful of cell lines. To me the big gap is in the complexity of the human body, in all the cell types and how they change over time in development โ and all that data is missing. We have got pretty good information on what sequences are important, but when we went into AlphaGenome it couldnโt predict any of them because it has never seen data from a developing limb in an embryo or a developing eye. It is good at what itโs trained on, but not very good at the complexity of cell types in the body.
And here is an excerpt from the transcript of my interview with someone who works on human gene regulation. Says it all.
Quietly, calmly and forensically, BBC just dismantled the Trump communications shitshow on Iran.
No hyperbole, just laying out an unprecedented military, diplomatic and reputational shambles.

Would the founders of the modern American conservative movement approve of Trump's war in Iran? I won't pretend to speak for them. But earlier this evening, I sat down with Richard Nixon AI, Ronald Reagan AI, & Antonin Scalia AI, and they all said Trump should be in jail and AOC should be president
That was supposed to be *pun*-filled, not fun-filled. DYAC.
CTY? Me, too, before it was called CTY. At about that age I went through a Piers Anthony phase which I remember through a rose-tinted, fun-filled haze. I guess there was more going on than I realized, but I read only the surface until I was in, I dunno, my fifties.
