"AI layoffs" like Block's are a race to the bottom that have nothing to do with productivity. You won't be replaced by AI, nor a person using AI, because backfills aren't real.

Jack Dorsey is copying the 2023 leadership framework:
- overhire
- lay everyone off
- pretend it's because of AI productivity gains
- stock go up

The layoff victims were some of the most productive, AI-pilled people in the company, but it didn't save them, because that's not what it was about.

Actually, the left is winning the AI debate But it does need to get organized.

The left is not "missing out" on AI. It's winning the argument. Americans worry about AI and dislike tech CEOs. They're mobilizing against data centers. They support regulation, even refusal.

Calls for the left to embrace AI are an effort to change the terms of the debate in Silicon Valley's favor.

There has to be a way On the future of art and labor in the age of American AI and authoritarianism.

Last week, hundreds of creative workers amassed at a public hearing for an AI transparency bill to testify how AI was corroding their lives. Days later, Disney cut a deal with OpenAI, and Trump moved to stamp out state AI laws.

On art and labor in the age of AI and American authoritarianism:

This reminds me of classes in like 1995 where I was taught how to use Altavista to find a random Geocities page about George Washington Carver written by ????. In retrospect I’m so glad classroom time was devoted to this

I gave my students a very impassioned plea against using AI for their work at the beginning of this semester. Now some of their major assignments are coming in, and not only is their work coming up clean on every AI detector, it's also very good stuff. There's hope out there.

AI coding hype overblown, Bain shrugs : Tried by two-thirds of firms, ignored by most devs, and productivity barely moved

One study found that β€œAI coding tools actually made software developers slower, despite expectations to the contrary, because they had to spend time checking for and correcting errors made by the AI”

If there's anything I believe from Elon Musk's self-mythmaking, it's that he read Foundation and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He may have read none of the other books he's claimed to have read, but those? Zero reason to doubt it

Three things explain this. First, while models beat humans on benchmarks, the standardized tests designed to measure AI performance, they struggle to replicate this performance in hospital conditions. Most tools can only diagnose abnormalities that are common in training data, and models often don’t work as well outside of their test conditions. Second, attempts to give models more tasks have run into legal hurdles: regulators and medical insurers so far are reluctant to approve or cover fully autonomous radiology models. Third, even when they do diagnose accurately, models replace only a small share of a radiologist’s job. Human radiologists spend a minority of their time on diagnostics and the majority on other activities, like talking to patients and fellow clinicians.

Only people can do jobs, period.

Lynch saw things in a weird way. Look at what he did with early digital video in Inland Empire. It's possible he *might* have done something with AI that no one else could have ever thought of, because he's David Lynch and the rest of us aren't. Unfortunately he's dead, and slop is still slop

This is happening because there's a famous quote about AI being good that's attributed to Lynch. I think a rule one could take from this is that it's ghoulish to use a recently dead person as a mascot because you have a hunch they would agree with you. Lot's of potential applications for this...
