Terry really hit it out of the park with this post. I even posted it on the bulletin board outside my office. I'm making time today to rekindle my joy.

In Massachusetts we learned to park at the bottom of the driveway (closest to road) to minimize the amount of shoveling needed. Learned that the hard way!

Tuesday is for toe beans.
I have mine hanging in the office already. Gorgeous artwork to brighten any space.
Looking for a postdoc in 2026? The Ewel fellowship at UF provides $70K salary and $20K research support for 2 yrs. I'm happy to sponsor a postdoc interested in microbial ecology of Florida coastal ecosystems (seagrass, coral, mangroves, springs). π¦ Due 1/11/26

The Brown and Stachowicz labs are looking for a postdoc for an NSF-funded project on the thermal dependence of disease in eelgrass! As a bonus you get to be based at the Bodega Marine Lab! Interested? Find out more here: brown-ecology.com/join-us/
BIOLOG question: is there a good pipeline or program to compare biolog results (either in terms of absorbance reads or carbon sources/antibiotics/etc) to KEGG outputs from whole genome sequencing? Right now our tech is doing am manual comparison but there has to be an easier way. π¦ π§¬
That's pretty hilarious!

My life changed when I first read "The Sea Around Us." Rachel Carson's words captured my 13-yr old sense of wonder for a place I barely knew but felt for so deeply, the ocean. Honored to speak to her legacy @agu.org and grateful to my colleagues for the nomination ππ

Looking for a postdoc in coral-associated bacterial genomes/metagenomes/metatranscriptomes? This would be an excellent program to support your original research ideas in a lab with extensive resources, samples, and datasets.
Using LLMs would involve more effort than the majority of emails that I get where the prospective student just copies and pastes my own words from the faculty web page.

Building something new is possible. Never forget that.
Has anybody found archaea that cause disease in humans?
(Weβre talking causation by Kochβs postulates here.)
When I last taught Micro, the answer was no. Wondering if something popped up in past couple years.
The eel facts advent calendar has 5 species of eel on it, ribbon eels which are royal blue and bright yellow, american and european eels hanging out in some eelgrass, a yellow moray, and 2 splendid garden eels which are orange and yellow. The boxes are all numbered in fun boxes with orange and light organ zigzags and a yellow oval in each with the number of the day
You ready for this year's advent calendar?
We're learning about EELS!!!!!
This year's artist @ehrenenglish.bsky.social absolutely knocked it out of the park. Look at these eels!!
These facts cover both biology & history of eels.

Hi folks, we had a last minute cancellation at MBL STAMPS, the microbiome data analysis course in Woods Hole that runs from July 14th to July 24th. We can provide housing space for a woman. If you or anyone you know is interested, pls drop me an e-mail at ctbrown@ucdavis.edu. Thx!
It's officially official. Starting July 1st, I'm an Associate Professor with tenure. Phew! Now, where do I find funding for the next phase?
