Like that term. "Politics of refusal" - anywhere one could read more about that?
Illustration showing a man standing on a crumbling wall to the left. On the right, a woman is standing on the floor. There are holes dug in the ground around her. A pair of scales can be seen in the background. Illustration by Feimo Zhu for an article written by Daniel Aaron Levy.

The Yoghurt, it is alive! An illustration, in deep reds and yellows, showing a pot of yoghurt with a monster face dropping in from the top left. On the lower right, a classic "Final Girl" horror protagonist screams in horror.
The Yoghurt, it is alive!
Our most recent animated short is based on these wonderful illustrations created by one of our team. Our goal was to play with the idea of horror, to subvert expectations and flip the script.

Two panel black and white comic, split down the middle between right and left. Both panels show an observation room with two scientists sat at a desk at the bottom of the image reviewing images on two monitors. The left wall on the left panel has a plaque that reads βPope Paul XIII institute for neuroscienceβ, the left wall on the right panel has a plaque that reads βD. Rawkins institute for neuroscienceβ. Through the observation window in both panels taking up most of the upper right corner is a large tube shaped machine with a person lying within. The personβs head and shoulders cannot be seen, only the left arm legs and feet are shown. The machine is labelled MRI in the very top right corner of each panel. The monitors in the observation rooms show the same images of brain scans, the left monitor shows a grid of various shapes that look like little nuts. The right monitor shows a simplified scan of the side view of within a human head, showing skull and brain with a round white spot. The left panel shows a speech bubble form the scientists that reads βClear evidence for the βGod Spotββ the same bubble emanates from the scientist on the right panel but reads βClearly NOT evidence for the βGod Spotββ.
How do scientists know what we are thinking?
Cognitive neuroscience is the science of trying to understand how our brains enable our cognitive abilities.

Kazakhstan's Mangystau plateau, near the border with Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, at sunset. Layers of ancient salt deposits resemble fjords of white, pink, red and orange icing spilling into a vast gray plane
In an obscure corner of Kazakhstan, the remains of an ocean millions of years old have created probably the most surreal landscape on earth -- as captured by photographer Daniel Kordan

It seems pretty clear to me now: Keir Starmer would rather lose to Reform than to the Labour left, which is his real enemy. Any policy that might recover lost ground with voters has to be struck down, as it looks like a concession to the Labour left. And he and his team cannot contemplate that.

An illustration showing four professionals from diverse ethnic backgrounds in the UK. From upper left: a young Central Asian female lawyer dressed in a suit, a middle-aged South East Asian man with a grey beard wearing a yellow hard hat and protection goggles, a young doctor with curly black hair on a wheelchair, and a non-binary black camera operator.
Showing the viability of careers in the creative sector to people from Black and Ethnic Minority Backgrounds is crucial in building racial diversity in the sector.

We believe this particular case study is thanks to the research of @barnaclebarclay.bsky.social who combines coastal archaeology and conservation paleobiology to look at human-animal-environment relations.

Of course! Part of an illustration series commissioned by @erinmdillon.bsky.social to showcase how the field can lead to real world changes.
