By the 1920s, more Americans lived in urban areas than rural. If you're looking at early 20thC you have a short window, one that had a world war, a global pandemic, and intense racial violence. In CA, a lot of ag labor was even then done by migrant labor, including Mexicans and Mexican Americans.

we see a lot of news stories about AI data centers ruining cities, noise, pollution, etc, so i'd really like to see some positive stories about AI, like someone burning down a data center, or a data center falling into a sinkhole. something that brings us together to laugh

Luke O'Neil quoting that slate article: we're bringing back literary snobbery. Genre fiction doesn't count as real books. Especially not romance.

The world would be so much better if L were a bloodbender, and same if I at least had one of those Death Notebooks.

Oh, also a novel I've been looking forward to forever, Year Of The Mer by L.D. Lewis, publishes April 7th!

Pledged today to help a senior dog whose owner dumped her at the shelter so he could get a puppy. We really need to start talking about the current human condition because it is bleak

People dumping any dog is so cruel, but I see that more and more, people dumping senior dogs that have been with them for years and years . . . like, where is your soul?

Normalize telling Whiskey Pete to shut the fuck up. Let everyone who hears his dumb voice respond with audible groans and eye rolls - every interviewer, every audience, every camera operator, every person in earshot. May he only know annoyance and disdain forever. Amen.

Trans kids are an easy target. Bigots lost ground on attacking gay people, so switched to trans people. And kids are an easy wedge issue because everyone gets worked up about protecting them. It's why book bans started in schools, too. Banning books is unpopular, but protecting kids is popular.

"War is mankind's most tragic and stupid folly; to seek or advise its deliberate provocation is a black crime against all men. Though you follow the trade of the warrior, you do so in the spirit of Washington -- not of Genghis Khan. For Americans, only threat to our way of life justifies resort to conflict."

"Possibly my hatred of war blinds me so that I cannot comprehend the arguments they adduce. But, in my opinion, there is no such thing as a preventive war.
Although this suggestion is repeatedly made, none has yet explained how war prevents war. Worse than this, no one has been able to explain away the fact that war creates the conditions that beget war."

Was browsing the Eisenhower Library site this morning trying to find a quote I remembered.

President Eisenhower, WW2 military hero:

β€œIn my opinion, there is no such thing as a preventive war… none has yet explained how war prevents war.”

If Timothee Chalamet wants to make being a reverse-snob part of his deal, whatever. Be a child, you know?

But at a time when arts funding and support are so imperiled, it would be nice not to lead with your contempt for wide swaths of the arts during your campaign to have your own art recognized.

George Orwell never said that, but what he did say was, β€œPolitical language is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind. ”

Wyoming lawmakers' proposal to ban 'explicit' books from libraries falters as clock runs out The Legislature was advancing a bill that backers saw as a common sense way to keep "sexually explicit" books out of kids hands. Critics saw it as a book ban, and Teton County librarians have lined up...

THE HORRIFIC BOOK BANNING BILL IN WYOMING WAS KILLED.

IT'S DEAD!!!!!!

If your knee-jerk right now is "yeah but so many other ones," cool. *Not right here or right now.*

Graphic of headline that reads, "Judge restores lawmakers’ unfettered access to ICE detention facilities. It was U.S. District Judge Jia Cobb's third time blocking or limiting DHS's efforts to prevent unannounced lawmaker visits." Full text of story linked in reply.

BLOCKED: A federal judge has ruled that lawmakers must be able to conduct congressional oversight of ICE detention facilities without being barred. We will not allow Kristi Noem to operate behind closed doors as ICE thugs kidnap immigrants from our communities.

Calling AI "slop" has been one of the most effective instances of the public rebranding a product and it pisses them off.
