Good to see this information board in the entrance to UCC Library raising awareness of indoor environmental quality.

Fresh air and comfortable temperatures improve study performance, while controlled humidity looks after all those books & archives.

Just when you think you've seen the most brain-dead hysterical media reporting on nonsensical anti-renewables "fears" whipped up on deranged Facebook groups, along comes the epic nonsense below:

Respirator masks (FFP2/N95) should be mandatory in hospitals and other healthcare settings when covid and flu are in the air.

1. Outstanding article from Tess Finch Lees:

Clean Air, Strategy, Policy, Public Health, Indoor Air Quality, PM2.5, CO2, Ventilation, HEPA โ€” Clean Air Advocacy Ireland As most people spend 90% of their time indoors, we must consider and include our indoor environments as part of our environment when developing a National Clean Air Strategy.

Just been asked to moderate panels at a big event with a high ticket price. But "sorry, they cannot offer a fee" to the moderators who make it possible. I didn't say no because of the money for me, but because of the exploitative business model (similar to academic publishing). This needs to stop.

Winter Olympics Faces New Climate Reality Unpredictable conditions are limiting where itโ€™s physically and financially possible to host the Winter Olympics.

Alpine areas are heating up faster than the rest of the planet: all the cities that staged the #WinterGames since 1950 have heated up in the years since by an average of 2.7C, according to scientists. Thatโ€™s well above 1.4C, the warming average for the entire planet www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

I inhaled traffic fumes to find out where air pollution goes in my body BBC health correspondent James Gallagher gets his blood analysed to understand how air pollution is killing us.

Air pollution particles don't just enter your lungs, they attach themselves to red blood cells and move around the whole body.

We don't breathe them out, so pollution accumulates in the body causing organ damage, dementia and more.

Reduce emissions and clear the air.

New research paper on transmission of respiratory viruses in schools.

Results - extended periods spent in poorly ventilated classrooms are a stronger driver of within-school transmission than individual contact rates.

Solution - monitor air quality and ensure classrooms are well ventilated.

What a wildly stupid idea.

Mandatory helmets and high viz is a proven remedy to reduce the number of people cycling. It effectively kills off things like Dublin Bikes.

That's why no other EU country does anything like this. Pure madness.

PRESS RELEASE - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ISSUED 30/11/2025

Urgent Action Needed to Quell Spread of Flu in Schools

Flu is spreading earlier than last year, with children heavily impacted.
Public health advice to schools should be updated to account for airborne transmission of flu.

Clean Air Advocacy Ireland (CAAI) has written to Dr Abigail Collins, the HSEโ€™s clinical lead on child public health, and to Hildegarde Naughton, the Minister for Education and Youth, to ask that public health advice to schools be urgently updated to reduce the spread of the current flu wave.

The appeal comes in the wake of a warning last week from Childrenโ€™s Health Ireland (CHI) that its emergency departments and urgent care centres had witnessed a surge in presentations of children with flu-like symptoms.

In addition to advising parents to keep symptomatic children at home, CAAI wants schools to be properly informed about how to reduce the spread of common airborne illnesses, including flu, RSV, and Covid-19. This advice includes:

Keeping classrooms well ventilated

Using air filters in classrooms.

Using CO2 monitors to measure indoor air quality. CO2 levels should be kept below 800ppm.

โ€œFlu has hit Ireland almost a month earlier than last year,โ€ says Kieran Ryan of CAAI,โ€ and we know that school-acquired infections can lead to flu spreading in the wider community, with children bringing an infection home to their siblings, parents, and older relatives.โ€

โ€œIt would be prudent to issue updated public health advice to schools immediately to try to reduce transmission of flu, or else we can expect a severe flu season that will have a major impact across schools, hospitals, and other parts of our society.โ€

Blue text on pale blue background: Did you know? COVID-19 is still not recognised as an occupational illness in Ireland Let's clean our air

COVID-19 remains unrecognised as an occupational illness in Ireland. The argument is that it's too difficult to prove an infection source, as COVID-19 is so pervasive in our communities. This is an admission of failure and not a justifiable excuse. #cleantheair #cleanairforall

Great thread on societal questioning around science.

Key message for me is that the burden of proof lies with the challengers and not with those in mainstream science where things like man-made climate change are proven and widely accepted by the experts.

Air quality monitors installed in Enniscorthy after years of alarming air pollution A network of air quality monitors have been installed around Enniscorthy town as part of a UCC and University of Galway research project on emissions called TownAir.

We installed a low cost sensor network in Enniscorthy, a town in Ireland with a history of wintertime air pollution.

The network shows how pollution from solid fuel burning varies across the town
