I think he actually *had* to make that vote because it was a top salience issue even for Dems at the time of the vote. I hated it but it was probably the most appropriate fold at the time for his state and electorate.

Also worth noting it's a Geneva convention violation to target medical facilities (if that part is true), regardless of who they treat.

Also if it was a medical facility, that is another war crime, regardless of whether it was treating civilians or combatants.

I can’t emphasise leading w/ empathy for civilians *everywhere* on a day like today enough.

The first casualty here in the UAE, where I live, is an Asian civilian at a residential building.

Many Ukrainians, Palestinians, Iraqis, Syrians, Sudanese & other war-traumatised people live here.

ICE killed a teacher in Georgia today when they chose to chase a man who posed no danger and had no criminal history.

I think tickets have tried that and it doesn't work. Low information voters don't turn out bc they like the veep choice.

In my own life, I want to get to a place closer to the romantic ideal of a mid century academic. I want to spend more time coming up with new ideas. I want to brainstorm with colleagues across disciplines. I want to read more broadly and take a lot of walks. Maybe this is more achievable after

What does this mean for researchers and teachers? In the classroom, I plan to use less technology *in class* and to shift away from assignments where students are spending intensive time executing a task on the computer. Assignments integrate AI use or be analog (I ideally like to mix these).

The value of thinking predates the computer. I am very comfortable arguing it predates written language! Creativity and connection do as well!

If we no longer have to execute tasks on the computer, but instead task AI with the execution of those tasks, we could see a shift back toward a more analog world. I *hope* this does not mean an end to 'thought work' or that the only job options for our children are health and the trades.

Not a Luddite but I do think we *could* be approaching the end of a 'way of life', and even in the best policy/economic scenarios, it is natural and approach to feel some grief about that. However, I am trying to push myself to imagine best case outcomes. The 'way of life' we may be losing--

I think a lot about the most pessimistic outcomes and they shape the options for my children.

Chips on the table, I find AI to be a powerful/transformative technology, I am very pessimistic about the ability of our govt to make choices that protect safety and do not worsen inequality or social and environment harms, and I personally enjoy using it.

I recently won an award from my university for use of AI in the classroom, so, like everyone, I have been thinking a lot about how AI will shape the next couple decades and what that means for college students now (and my much younger kids).
