And for the record, my tics are very mild, but they can still be exhausting, especially in company.
At the time it made me sad. Later it made me very angry.
It's just so often seen as some kind of "joke" ailment because swearing=funny.
That or you can't possibly have it because you don't swear uncontrollably.
I had to get a diagnosis a number of years back to see a specialist (new tic causing physical issues). The ignorance of my GP was astounding. As was that of the psychiatrist he made me see before he would refer me to a neurologist.
I'd also like to point out just how hard it can be to deal with even a "little" example because it feels like it's so visible/audible to everybody around you, usually resulting in some kind of suppression until you find a place to "let it out", which makes it so much worse ...
Just to point out, but only about 10% of Tourettes sufferers actually experience coprolalia. This is why it's incredibly frustrating to see all the "jokes" equating lots of swearing with having Tourettes, because in fact _most_ people with Tourettes are just some form your "little" examples.
That is still incredibly cool and more countries should do it!
I'd forgotten Iceland did this. I wish Sweden did. I think I would immediately quit my job and at least give the writing gig a go. 15kSEK/month isn't much, but it's enough to actually give that safety net.
Out of interest - do they stop paying that salary at a certain age and consider you retired?
