Rejection?! Must be nice! I'll have you know I can be *completely ignored* with dramatically less water and electricity usage than your average data center.
Switching to air-cooling is water intensive, but pushes water use off-site. For the same compute power they need more energy for cooling. Because so much of our energy in AZ comes from fracked gas, there are millions of gallons used to extract gas, and more at the plants for steam for turbines.
Jeez it’s a trade secret!! How are mom & pop megacorp data center developers supposed to compete if they tell us everything they put into the water???

The City of Tucson is considering regulations on large-scale data centers. The first draft is bad. We need mayor and council to redirect staff to write regulations that make it impossible to build large-scale data centers in our community. Here's more info and how you can help.
For example, the proposed definition of large-scale data center uses a minimum area for the cutoff. But it's not the size that counts, it's the energy it takes! Let's instead define them by the number of megawatts they need and set that cap at whatever the largest current data center in Tucson uses.

Yuuuup. Our use of the internet simply does not scale in proportion to the proliferation of hyperscale data centers. Netflix doesn’t have a billion new movies. We’re not uploading 1000x as many cat videos.
What does explain it? The largest transfer and consolidation of wealth in recent human history in the form of land grabs, water grabs, repackaged debt, surveillance contracts for Palantir, Flock, et al, a full resurgence of the fossil fuel industry and corresponding climate death…
Greenwashing was… already a thing? Like we were ALREADY generating and consuming too much energy and companies. Now hyperscale data centers are making that MANY TIMES WORSE. And all they offer to explain their necessity are empty and meaningless marketing campaigns.
