The Most Chilling Detail in the U.S. Attack on an Iranian Naval Ship
The Iranian warship was taking part in an international exercise with many other countriesโincluding the United States.
This is a chilling crime. A shame on our country. The Iranian ship was unarmed. The US knew this. The sailors were murdered by our navy, and the survivors were left to die at sea.

Rejection?! Must be nice! I'll have you know I can be *completely ignored* with dramatically less water and electricity usage than your average data center.

Switching to air-cooling is water intensive, but pushes water use off-site. For the same compute power they need more energy for cooling. Because so much of our energy in AZ comes from fracked gas, there are millions of gallons used to extract gas, and more at the plants for steam for turbines.

Screenshot of a 3hr old post from the GW Hatchet: โBREAKING: GW sold its Virginia campus to Amazon Data Services, an Amazon subsidiary that manages the company's data centers, for $427 million on Friday. The deed, obtained by The Hatchet, authorizes ADS to develop the campus into a data or information technology center.
STORY TKโ
GWโs student newspaper appears to have broken the story that the institution has sold a satellite campus to Amazon to be turned into a data center, which is just about chefโs kiss for the state of American higher education rn

'A Big F*ck You to Big Tech': New Jersey Residents Defeat AI Data Center | Common Dreams
"It's time to build communities, not data centers," said one local activist.
New Brunswick, NJ just canceled plans for a colossal AI data center after massive pushback from the community.
That's a huge win for people power.
AI data centers are sucking up communitiesโ utilities AND draining state resources โ while enriching Big Tech CEOs.

For example, the proposed definition of large-scale data center uses a minimum area for the cutoff. But it's not the size that counts, it's the energy it takes! Let's instead define them by the number of megawatts they need and set that cap at whatever the largest current data center in Tucson uses.

A screenshot from Ring's Superbowl ad depicting a surburban neighborhood becoming a mass surveillance network with its Ring camera coverage. A pink grid overlays it with the title, "Ring breaks up with Flock." A broken stylized heart falls to the side.
A caption reads, "Following the backlash they received for their Superbowl ad, Amazonโs Ring cancelled its partnership with Flock, which would have shared access to its over 10 million private security cameras and their data collected nationwide."
A pink background with a green teal grid sets the background with a microphone and Flock camera perched on either side. Title A reads, "This is a HUGE WIN by Blocking an Expansion of the Surveillance State" with the following text under, "Flockโs massive AI-powered surveillance database gives unprecedented and warrantless access to the police and has been used to track abortion seekers, target protestors, and collaborate with ICE to surveil and detain migrants."
A secondary title reads, "BUT Amazon Continues to Partner with Axon Enterprises to Spy On Our Communities" with the following text under, "Axon Enterprises offers a direct line to police and ICE by providing tasers, body-worn cameras, drones, and automated license plate readers."
A pink background with a green grid overlayed make up the background. Our Head of Programs, Jacinta Gonzรกlez, is seen speaking on the lower right corner. The top title reads, "Mass Surveillance is NOT neutral." Under this reads, "It has always been built on anti-Blackness, xenophobia, and settler colonialism. AI automates this violent legacy."
Under this is a secondary title, "We Call On:"
With the following bulleted text under that,
"Ring customers to stop using the company's products;
Communities to continue organizing to shut down Flock, Axon, and every tech corporation that wields its wealth and power to extract from us."
#Amazonโs Ring is breaking up with #Flock! Now that weโve cut access to 10M+ household cameras with the police and ICE, letโs take it a step further and cut Ringโs partnership with Axon Enterprise.
We deserve a world without surveillance.

Yuuuup. Our use of the internet simply does not scale in proportion to the proliferation of hyperscale data centers. Netflix doesnโt have a billion new movies. Weโre not uploading 1000x as many cat videos.

What does explain it? The largest transfer and consolidation of wealth in recent human history in the form of land grabs, water grabs, repackaged debt, surveillance contracts for Palantir, Flock, et al, a full resurgence of the fossil fuel industry and corresponding climate deathโฆ

Greenwashing wasโฆ already a thing? Like we were ALREADY generating and consuming too much energy and companies. Now hyperscale data centers are making that MANY TIMES WORSE. And all they offer to explain their necessity are empty and meaningless marketing campaigns.
