the last interesting innovation this industry came up with was smartphones, and that one happened almost 20 years ago, and was only an incremental improvement over 20-30y/o already-widespread technology.
Interesting, long-lasting things happen slowly, steadily, and sustainably.
you'd figure after 3 of these in a row, people would realize what's going on, but the dollar signs and the culty proselytizing by peers has clearly been too much to hold each next new thing at bay.
It's either greed, or some idealistic "THIS IS THE FUTUREEEEE" bullshit, which is never true.
and of course, each one feeds into the next, with VCs breathlessly trying to find the next bandwagon to jump on to try and save their asses when it's clear that one thing is definitely not going to work out long term, because none of them _ever could_
there's always been hucksters in our industry, to be sure, but the sheer level of "we don't care about the extreme harm this is causing" has been particularly glaring with the last 3-4 cycles (cryptocurrency, NFTs, metaverse, and now genAI, all scams, all destructive AF beyond anything before them)
absolute embarrassment of an industry. I've lost all respect for it lmao
