Louisiana pipeline explosion shows deep dangers of LNG buildout for our communities, in Louisiana and beyond | The Lens As more gas moves hundreds of miles by pipeline to an increased number of LNG export terminals licensed by the Trump administration, more pipeline leaks and explosions seem inevitable.

Economic losers:
- Asian buyers holding long-term contracts with Qatar who will need to fill for missing cargo at increased prices
- European gas buyers and others who buy gas on the spot market
- Buyers whose contracts are oil-indexed.

*Any of this can be outdated as this is a fluid situation

Economic winners in this situation include:

- Venture Global
- Any US LNG exporter that has uncontracted capacity
- Buyers of US LNG who can sell their offtake on the spot market
- LNG exporters whose contracts are oil-indexed

**LNG ops are HEAVY on the LA and TX gulf coast

Yesterday European gas futures were up 78% this week and Asian gas futures were up 50%. Prices are being driven by the perception of risk and uncertainty. This makes the market volatile.

*US Henry Hub gas prices are only up by ~5%. That number could rise as things change.

Qatar has shut down LNG production.

Their facility is not damaged but is at risk for attack and has filled up its storage capacity.

More than 80% of Qatari LNG goes to Asia. Asia received roughly a quarter of its LNG from Qatar.

Before the “war” started, 20% of global oil and 20% of global LNG exports were shipped through the Strait of Hormuz.

That LNG comes from Qatar, the world’s 2nd largest LNG producer. There are no alternate routes Qatari LNG can take to reach the global market.
