Their romance seems doomed from the start. As the Hephaestus speeds up, and the time distortion makes it so that a month, a year, a decade passes by on Earth for every day on Finch’s ship, the crew’s penpals start to die. Every one except for Aku. More than 100 years later, he’s still there.
And even then, he’s kind of ambivalent about having a penpal to begin with. But as the two talk, they start to bond, and after the Hephaeustus engages its hyperdrive, Finch learns that time isn’t passing the same for him as it is for Aku. Things start getting weird at near-FTL speeds.
Atticus “Finch” Davani is a reluctant passenger on the Hephaestus, a scientific research vessel on a long-haul journey out of our solar system. He hates being an astronaut, he hates his crew mates, and he hates space. All he has is his corporate mandated penpal back on Earth, Aku.
