Pauline Kael absolutely nailed Michael Cimino in her review of Year of the Dragon (1985). This is true of all of his work, including The Deer Hunter (1978), though i would say it peaks with The Sicilian (1987), a film that is truly visually stunning but totally dead on arrival.

finally saw 'Heaven's Gate' (1980), and Michael Cimino was truly one of the worst to ever do it. it's shocking that they let him keep making movies after that.

you watch a Hal Ashby movie from the 70s and you start thinking he might be one of the great overlooked (by non-cinephiles) directors of the New Hollywood. then you watch a Hal Ashby movie from the 80s and wonder why we even invented cameras. movies aren't worth it.

Absolutely lost it at the “You may have missed this subtle detail” reveal 3/4 through the vid. Always considered the skeptic framing misguided at best, willfully ignorant at worst, but this misread of Scooby-Doo has been unmasked as the hoax it always was. A must-watch for skeptic & believer alike.
