Menβs Help-Seeking Willingness and Disclosure of Depression: Experimental Evidence for the Role of Pluralistic Ignorance
π Publication alert!
Findings suggest that menβs willingness to seek help for mental health is underestimated not only by other men but women too. Lower willingness to disclose help-seeking may play a role!

Not the worst thing, I know, but itβs especially irritating to be perpetually condescended to by people with such limited insight & lack of self-awareness.

Oh to be so smart. I do wonder, as a mere pleb, why I never hear them discuss why, even if this is the case, why it is obviously a terrible system that will inevitably barrel us further rightward each time & that perhaps we ought to do something about it? Almost like theyβre actually happy with it

Perhaps. I do get the point isn't to show an accurate psych assessment but rather Jamie's reactions to illustrate his inner world & relationship to women (& that's fine) but like medical Dr's with hospital dramas, I can't help but twitch watching it. The series was still brilliant regardless!

and then cutting the relationship dead, with no warning - recreating the rejection his rage functions to defend against. Seems like his responses were entirely predictable. Would definitely be taking that one for supervision afterwards, if I were them.

Watched Adolescence - like everyone, thought it was fantastic (if that's the right word) but I must ask, as useful as it was for bringing out Jamie's inner world on screen, what that psychologist thought they were playing at? Arguing, escalating, eliciting shame with no plan to respond to it >

As we all know, the most moral thing you can do to help ppl is to make simply existing as painful as possible. Grinding poverty is well known for its ability to spontaneously resolve mental & physical health problems, & not at all make them worse.
Itβs for their own good.

Experts criticise Streeting for saying mental health problems overdiagnosed
Health secretaryβs comments that too many people are βwritten offβ prompts warnings against stigmatising people
The pushback here is correct but worth recognising that the evidence of over-diagnosis is not really the point. Itβs a belief that follows from the intent to cut spending, not the other way around. >

Worth pointing out that, as the wealth of the super-rich grows faster than the economy they by necessity buy more assets, pushing up prices & making the rest of us poorer, in an economic death spiral. The answer is to tax wealth more than work, to put wealth back into the hands of ordinary ppl.

UK drops down list of affluent nations after decade of stagnation, NIESR finds
Districts in Birmingham now ranked below poorest areas of France, Malta and Slovenia as institute urges rethink on planned welfare cuts
Constantly surprised that anyone is surprised by this. Literally walk around the average high street with your eyes open & youβll see the decline.
This is what happens when you refuse to tackle inequality. The wealthiest take all the money & everyone else gets poorer, year on year, forever.

Another way to react, is to ask what must be going so wrong in our society that it's making 25% of us so unwell each year that we meet the criteria of a diagnosable mental disorder? But that, I suppose, might lead to less convenient conclusions.

One way to react to what is, admittedly, the epidemic of mental health problems in this country is to assume that they are over-diagnosed. (Also a pretty convenient conclusion when your aim is to cut spending on support - but I'm sure that is just a happy coincidence). >

First time at the Union Jack Club. Itβs nice enough & I can hear the sounds of a 1000 sandbags being pulled up all at once in the bar, as I walk past. But itβll have to wait, I have an afternoon to myself & Iβm just middle-aged enough to think a nice museum instead is a better way to spend it

Today, I will be negotiating London, & the underground, as a non-Londoner, trying to work out how those maps relate to the platforms.

Why are we asking Stephen Fry what he thinks about anything, beyond the entertainment industry, when there are scores of experts they could get on? So tired of this trivial nonsense.
