I love how that latest interview she acts as if she was fine or somehow ambivalent to the "spectrum" idea until recently, even though she has been fighting it for a long time. Oof.
Ah yes, Prof Uta "autistics lack theory of mind and cognitive empathy" Frith, who has been at odds with the current state of things for a long time. 10 yrs ago she said she resists the idea of blurring the lines between autism and everyone else and now she says the spectrum has "gone too far." π
Congress has appropriated the funds to NSF but OMB is delaying the release. When funds are released, NSF, which has lost almost 1/5 of its staff, will struggle to evaluate proposals. Since they have to award the funds, big projects with established PIs will benefit. This is how US science dies.
The savings we're getting here by annihilating decades of American science will pay for whole minutes of the operation to create decades of death, immiseration, and chaos in Iran.
Devastating. It's really not looking good out there.
The second you leave this country for even a few days, you realize the place you call home is decaying at an almost exponential pace. The realization that you don't have to live like this is stark, and that nobody in power is taking tangible actions to fix it in your lifetime is even starker.
I'd love for community members to initiate some grassroots "class times" where people go through a course together!! Learning new skills is always better with community.
Thanks, Ayaan!!

today was the The Internet Is A Privately Owned Public Space lecture in my big undergrad class. a student came up afterwards and started by asking me if i had heard of cyberpunk and ended by asking me if violent insurrection was the only way forward
Folks found out I was into baking and told me that they have the best napoletana style pizza they've ever had. Several faculty (at least 3 or 4) recommended it to me, unprompted. I haven't been yet! My visit was too packed. But if I recall, you're a fan of yeasty/bubbly brick oven/wood fired pizza?
Ah, thanks Joey! And yeah, I'm heading down to San Luis Obispo. I won't take the weather for granted at all, especially after these years in Pittsburgh, heh.
Thanks, Lauren!!
Thank you, Yusuf!! <3
Thanks, Miska!
Thanks so much Susan!! I'm so glad to be in data science because I'll have one foot in CS and one with the folks in stats. I'll absolutely reach out to Emily once I'm getting situated!
Absolutely! And of course, if you ever visit, don't be shy!
(Also: have you been to Flour House in SLO? You have to go if you haven't been...)
Eyy, that's fun to know! And thanks!!
Aw, thanks so much, Jasmine!! And yeah, we are really excited to go back... it's pretty deluxe in the central coast area.
