Anti-Slavery International are deeply concerned about the UK Governmentโs earned settlement proposal & the recent announcement from the Home Secretary that would reduce refugeesโ status from 5 years to 30 months, & the impact this may have on modern slavery survivors.
Some in Government insist that modern slavery claims are being used to get in the way of deportation attempts.
This narrative misses that in fact, claims of experiencing modern slavery are met with huge barriers in immigration detention.
She makes the case for moving beyond crisis management towards a preventive, rights-based response where modern slavery is embedded as a core safeguarding responsibility.

In this first blog, Emily reflects on the barriers Local Authorities face as First Responders โ from inconsistent identification to fragmented multi-agency working.
Weโre launching a new series of guest blogs from experts who helped shape the joint Middlesex University and Anti-Trafficking Monitoring Group training framework, designed to strengthen Local Authoritiesโ responses to modern slavery.

UK action has a real global impact and is part of our wider global effort to challenge forced labour wherever it occurs. We must spotlight these abuses and make sure governments and companies cannot ignore Uyghur abuses.
In the UK, these materials risk tainting products we use every day, like cotton in apparel and textile products, quartz and polysilicon in solar panels, and tomatoes in tomato paste.

Raw materials in several sectors have been linked to state-imposed forced labour in the Uyghur region.
By failing to ensure that the rights and dignity of migrant workers are guaranteed and respected by employers, these abuses are being enabled.

According to the Coalition on Labour Justice for Migrants in the Gulf, there are 31 million migrant workers in the GCC countries, many of which are exposed to situations of severe exploitation.
Restrictions on freedoms, wage theft and isolation are all realities often faced by migrant workers in countries where sponsorship systems exist, such as in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries.

โก๏ธ Increase wages to help prevent exploitation.
No response.
Anti-Slavery International urges the UK Government to back the calls from experts and people affected by the seasonal worker visa and commit to safeguarding workers' welfare and interests through action, not just in principle.
โก๏ธ Guaranteeing at least 2 monthsโ pay to help prevent workers from falling into debt.
The Government pointed to the Employer Pays Principle as a better route to preventing debt. But Government representatives have already said that they have no plans to implement the Principle.
โก๏ธ Allow a more flexible visa (reducing how long workers have to wait to return to the UK for work)
This would help safeguard workers against harm & prevent debt bondage, but the Government admits immigration rules would make this too hard to go as far as the Migration Advisory Committee recommends.
New article from @tbij.bsky.social details recommendations (made by the Migration Advisory Committee in July 2024) to improve the seasonal worker scheme that the UK Government either rejected or ignored.
Here is a summary of the recommendations and how the UK Government responded:
Everyone should be able to access safe and secure work. But we know the seasonal worker visa, introduced in 2019, has contributed to people being exploited and harmed in UK businesses' supply chains.
โFor the last few years, calls to reform the seasonal worker visa have gone largely ignored. Now, the government has even rejected several recommendations from its own independent immigration advisers.โ

Brands must act responsibly to protect garment workersโ futures and create a safer, more ethical and sustainable fashion industry for all.
๐ Read @business-humanrights.org's briefing here: www.business-humanrights.org/en/from-us/b...
The recorded incidents are not isolated. Political and economic instability, as well as a production model that depends on low costs and intense pressure on suppliers, increase labour rights abuses in the garment industry.
โ ๏ธ The Business and Human Rights Centreโs (BHRC) new research shows that Myanmar's garment workers, who make clothes for major worldwide fashion brands, are facing increased, systemic abuse in the workplace since the 2021 military coup.
This week, London Fashion Week kicks off. Every London Fashion Week, we think about and spotlight harms that occur within and across supply chains, to urge businesses to improve working conditions worldwide.
